What a beautiful and touching story
When I read who the author was...Oscar Wild...I was completely surprised! This is truly a different side of him! Such a touching story...one to be read to our children, our grandchildren, and our great grandchildren! It's a book for all ages to read...I love this book...and now I will be sharing it with my young grandchildren + one on the way!

One of the most beautiful short stories I have ever read
One of the most beautiful short stories I have ever read. I love reading it out aloud. It has depth and also a light hardheartedness about it. I think it should be on everyone's bookshelf. The end gives me goosebumps.

A lovely metaphor of redemption and hope
This is one of my favorite stories. I first encountered it in an anthology of bedtime stories for six-year olds. I have used it several times over the years with youth and adults to encourage reflection and discussion about Christian hope and redemption. This edition is beautifully illustrated and can be read to children at bedtime to foster an appreciation of good literature.

Beautiful Classic Story with Superb Classic Illustrations
Beautiful classic illustrations to accompany one of my all-time favourite children's stories; more for the older child, rather than pre-school. Having said that, I have purchased this book for my first grandchild, due to be born in January! It's the type and quality of book that will be passed from generation to generation.

A gem
I didn't own a copy of this book when I was a child, but I remember having it read to me in the public library. There's a haunting quality to it which has never left me. For me, this remains one of many imagination-stirring fascinations from childhood that we all have.I bought a copy for my daughter, and although she is too young for it at six months, I do enjoy reading it to her and she likes looking at the pictures. And the pictures in this book really are lovely. They're the sort of illustrations that children often love - lots to look at, with all sorts of curious details in each one that will take time to spot and discuss. There's a slightly creepy element to the pictures which I like. The story has a Christian message but it's not over-done. I'm an atheist, but find the religious aspect pleasant. However, it may not be for everyone. I remember when I was little knowing the story had something to do with Jesus, but it is written with a bit of mystery and I didn't quite grasp the concept back then.

Beautiful book that kids enjoyed too
This is a beautiful book that me and my husband actually enjoy reading to our two under fives. Lovely pictures - obviously a bit sad and has religious message but if you’re happy with this then definitely recommended.
