Connected it to a battery and it would not charge it. Thinking I missed something I looked through the manual and read that it does not charge dead batteries. I'm thinking this might have been useful information to put in the description since it is sold as a battery charger.

I purchased this trickle charger to prolong the life of the battery in my Harley while it sits through the winter months. Plugged in the charger and it automatically switched to 12v and started charging. The charger also came the day after I ordered it! Will definitely be purchasing from Northeast Cycle Shop again in the near future!

This electronic 6vDC AND 12vDC battery charger will automatically sense the battery voltage and switch automatically to the correct battery type. This charger will perform according to its specifications. Theres only one negative aspect to this charger and its a common problem to these new microchipped controlled pulsed technology, battery chargers, and that is they WILL NOT CHARGE A DAMAGED BATTERY or FULLY DISCHARGED battery. They are not like dads old garage battery charger that MAY charge a dead battery. However, these type chargers CAN be TRICKED into charging a FULLY DISCHARGED BATTERY. First connect your dead battery to your old battery charger if you have one, if not connect the dead battery to another battery like you would to jump start your car. The trick is to try to get a couple of volts at least, into the dead battery so the microprocessor will recognize the dead battery to charge it. If the microprocessor charger cant sense the battery its connected to, then it cant charge the battery! The battery wont be "seen" by the chargers processor. But, you may also be able to connect a good battery in SERIES with a dead battery to the charger. The good battery will jump start the charging process by sending a single current THROUGH both the good battery,and the dead battery which will bring up the charge in the dead battery up to where the charger will "see" the dead battery then charge the battery on its own. If successful, the microprocessor will kick in and your UNDAMAGED dead battery will be desulphated(repaired) and fully charged overnight. If your dead battery gets HOT, BOILS ACID, SMOKES , OR SHOWS ANY SIGNS OF BEING HOT IMMEDIATELY DISCONNECT IT. THIS MEANS YOUR DEAD BATTERY HAS AN INTERNAL SHORT, OR DAMAGE TO THE INTERNAL PLATES.
