Tom Watson's Strategic Golf
J**Q
A must read for any mid-handicapper
This book won't really fix your swing or tell you why you're slicing the ball, but that's not what it's for. Once you reach a certain level of golf it's very hard to continue to improve without thinking about golf strategically. Some of this is just common sense where you will say why didn't I think of that before? And some of it really makes you think about things that you never would have thought of. All excellent advice and he's giving strategies that probably 90% of golfers should be using. thoughts about approaching different holes with elevated greens or how to set up for different dog legs. Great advice on how to score your best.

Well Worth Reading
I am still reading it and am in the middle of the book, so forgive me for a brief review. Tom Watson is one of few rare smart golfers whose words are trustworthy (he was a psycology major at Stanford). This is no exception and I enjoy reading it. As a relative novice in golf game, I didn't think much about strategy, but this book tells me that there are golf strategies I should learn. I read similar books written by Jack Nichklaus in the past and this book appears as good or better. Watson's "The Timeless Swing" is my golf Bible. This book became a good addition to it along with his "Getting Up and Down".

Great book from a legend
Great stuff here from Tom Watson. I credit this book, and one of Raymond Floyd's with really getting me thinking about course management. If you really want to drop some strokes, you've got to learn how to think your way around the course. Tom Watson was one of the best at it and although this book is not long, he really gives you some stuff to chew over. Plus I like books with pictures.

Legendary advice from a legend
Great practical advice for low to mid handicappers to achieve lower scores. High handicappers may enjoy it for its insights and potential, but may have trouble executing the strategies described in the book , as a golfer must be able to hit the ball with relative consistency to see the strategies work.

This book changed my approach to golf. Thinking backward ...
This book changed my approach to golf. Thinking backward from the hole rather than forward from the tee gave me a competitive advantage hole after hole, week after week and season after season in my local league.

A view into the mind and approach of a pro!
This book will benefit every level of handicap. But it will be most useful to those golfers in the low or mid handicap range that can control the golf ball most of the time.

A great Tool
This book has helped me become a smarter golfer. A smarter golfer is a better golfer. The tricks learned has reduced my score immediately. It will be a great reference book.

Great for matchplay and strokeplay competitions
For many non-golfers, it is a strange game; hit the ball, find it, then hit it again until it falls into a four and a quarter inch hole in the ground. For everyday golfers, it is a little more demanding and subtle than that. For professional golfers, it is a game of chess and the better the professional, the more refined and considered the carefully planned movement around the golf course to ensure efficient use of great physical skills. Without doubt, golf is a mental game played physically. This medium-format, well-illustrated book is an excellent introduction to the mental side of playing golf by utilising skills to plot a round of golf on all types of holes to achieve the best score, i.e. playing the potentials and when to take on the risk and reward holes or the mugs' pin positions. It also has early sections on how to play certain shots to attack the pin no matter where it is on the green. This is great explanation of how to play strategic golf by a master of the craft.

Clear exposition of an essential skill for golfers of all abilities
Even for a very high handicapper like me this book is very useful. I've saved quite a few strokes just by thinking differently about how I approach each hole. The complete mastery of his subject is evident in the way Watson can clearly and simply explain his thinking. Without any improvement in my shotmaking ability this high handicap player has still been able to save strokes and enjoy the game more.

Not as good as Ray Floyd
Not as good as Ray Floyd's classic book. Starting with how to shape shots for example seems a bit perverse. Stop yourself getting behind trees where you need these shots would be better advice and a better place to start!
