Great entertainment, really does give hours of fun...
Now I am a very sceptical father of a 6 year old daughter well used to buying presents that seemingly promise fun and hopefully a few hours peace only to find the picture on the box is actually the most colourful and memorable part of the gift. Not so with this item! Even with the addition of the book, this was bought with some trepidation for her 6th birthday(would a DS generation kid really go in for glorified updated Spirograph?) but it has proven an immediate hit and has been returned to again and again. Now every child is different but, from our point of view and on the basis of our daughter's reaction, can't say better than that. A further indication of success is that other parents have now bought it.Of related interest was that on a recent short break to EuroDisney, the restaurants there handed out 'gifts' of small toys to keep the kids occupied. And what did they hand out? Mini versions of Spirograph and the kids loved them. So, a 5/5 that I would not have predicted when we bought it!

Fantastic
Bought this for a 14 year old, of douse I'd used spirograph in the olden days. Didn't open till today 30th dec. What fun we have had. T was impressed with how it worked & amazed by the complex patterns, even animals or menga can be done. The pen is lovely too. Don't understand comments about storing rings, just use a box or pencil case. We will be taking this on holiday, it's ideal for keeping them quiet & learns patience as well. Drawn too fast the rings move, so slow down & use imagination. Will be getting this as birthday presents now.

Nice set - but there are better ones now
My 5yo has yet to see it (for Christmas) but I have tried it out. Attractive, sturdy, well thought out, nice book. The only slight disappointment was that the lovely multicoloured pen you get with it was slightly faulty - the pink pen keeps retracting and won't stay down. This is the colour my girl will love the most so I am going to have to find a replacement. It's not like the original Spirograph but let's be frank, you needed cardboard, pins, lots of space, bic biro refills to fit the tiny holes and a lot of imagination. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing but decades on, this is possibly (dare I say it) more fun for the modern child.Edit: at 5 1/2 my daughter is unable to hold the template steady enough on the page. The patterns and book, whilst fun, are not like the original Spirograph because they rely on shapes in a circle rather than graded holes. GALT do a nice little stencil and spiral draw set which is better and I see that a Chinese company has brought out the original Spirograph again. I will purchase that for my other children

Okay but there are better similar craft toys
Don't buy a second hand one, they can turn up without the parts, this happened to me and I returned it. Recently bought a new one, has all the parts. I like the way that all the templates can be used and centred on the same design, but I would recommend the spirograph Cyclex which is better made than this is. The book is great for kids and even has some useful ideas for creative adults. Have changed the rating.

Great for all kinds of project, my 8 yo absolutely loves it.
I got Spiral Draw for my 8 years old daughter (who had previously basic Spirograph) and she absolutely loves, use it all the time for all kinds of projects. It is much easier to use and seems to have more options than mentioned Spirograph in similar price range. The set comes with a drawing book and multicolored pen and would make perfect gift for any boy or girl her age.We will definitely be buying more Klutz sets in future.

Spiral Draw Book. Excellent !!
This is great. I purchased this for my 5 year old niece who loves it. However, I think it more suitable for a slightly older child. The spiral drawings are endless and hours of fun and amusement are guaranteed. I loved it so much I even purchased one for myself. Would definately recommend.

This is a really fun kit, given as an xmas present
This is a really fun kit, given as an xmas present. There's loads of different designs and it's nice that it comes with different coloured pens. Some reviews I saw said it didn't compare well to the old spirograph, but I have both so without rose tinted glasses I can say that I think it's just as good.

ITS OK
Its ok nothing to write home about, the pens they give you with it are crap, not amused by it at all.

Draw beautiful spirographs
What is a Spirograph?A Spirograph is a curve formed by rolling a circle inside or outside of another circle. The pen is placed at any point on the rolling circle. If the radius of fixed circle is R, the radius of moving circle is r, and the offset of the pen point in the moving circle is O, then the equation of the resulting curve is defined by:x = (R+r)*cos(t) - (r+O)*cos(((R+r)/r)*t)y = (R+r)*sin(t) - (r+O)*sin(((R+r)/r)*t)For examples of spirographs and how they are affected by R, r, and O check out the website: wordsmith.org/~anu/java/spirograph.html. Using the Java applet at the site, you can vary your spirographs by changing R, r, and O."The Spiral Draw Book" is accompanied by a fixed circle template called a 'frame,' and four moving circle templates called 'wheels' that have many offset points (holes within the wheel), so you can draw many different sizes of spirographs. The frame and the wheels are made of sturdy, translucent plastic in shades of blue, green, purple, and yellow. Three stubby gel pens are also included that supposedly change color as you draw. The book itself is spiral-bound with heavy-duty glossy pages on which the artist is encourage to complete printed drawings with spirographs. For instance, there's a flower pot with stems and leaves that can be finished by drawing spirograph flowers.Directions for use are clear and well-illustrated. The only tricky part (for me) was applying enough pressure to the frame so that it stayed in one place, but not so much pressure that the wheel stopped moving. This book also contains intstructions for making stationery, jewelry, bead curtains, and soak art.

Great Product!
I got it for my daughter (7 y.o.) and myself. It is fun to play with it. As other reviewers noted, it works great when it is used on the FLAT surface with pens of the set and papes on the booklet. When I hold the frame, my daughter can enjoy it without difficulties; however, it is difficult for my daughter to do it by herself since she cannot hold the frame without moving.Technique: I use it on the floor(hard flat surface) sitting on my bottom. I hold the frame of the spirograph with my feet and draw patterns. Even with this technique it is still a little bit hard for my daughter.I have tried the spirograph on normal paper or colorful construction paper. I used uni-ball* (Vision by Sanford) and twistable colored pencils by crayola as well as the pens which came with the spirograph booklet set. The pencils and uni-ball need to be held vertical. Also, they cannot be used for some of the small hole-shapes on the spirograph discs. The patterns made by crayola pencils are unclear;however, if combined with the ones made by uni-ball and the pens (of the set), the final patterns are very pretty especially on colorful construction paper. * Uni-ball: Be careful not to push it hard against the paper. Also, you need to draw a pattern quickly since the ink spreads on the paper and the paper gets ripped easily. Both my dauther and I enjoy it a lot. I wish the discs and frames are bigger, though.
