Product Description Homicide detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) has just seven days left to retirement when he is paired with his brash replacement David Mills (Brad Pitt). The pair investigate the murder of a man who has been force-fed until he burst, then that of a rich lawyer made to cut a pound of flesh from his own body and consequently bled to death. The fact that the word 'greed' is written in blood on the carpet leads Somerset to speculate that they are dealing with a serial killer who is using the seven deadly sins as a blueprint. From .co.uk The most viscerally frightening and disturbing homicidal maniac picture since The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is based on an idea that's both gruesome and ingenious. A serial killer forces each of his victims to die by acting out one of the seven deadly sins. The murder scene is then artfully arranged into a grotesque tableau, a graphic illustration of each mortal vice. From the jittery opening credits to the horrifying (and seemingly inescapable) concluding twist, director David Fincher immerses us in a murky urban twilight where everything seems to be rotting, rusting, or moulding; the air is cold and heavy with dread. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are the detectives who skillfully track down the killer--all the while unaware that he has been closing in on them, as well. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey are also featured, but it is director Fincher and the ominous, overwhelmingly oppressive atmosphere of doom that he creates that are the real stars of the film. It's a terrific date movie--for vampires. --Jim Emerson

An almost police procedural about moral decay.
My view is that director David Fincher has created a gem with se7en, flawed perhaps, but also sublime and it worked for me as the film came over very raw and transcending its basic roots which might have been viewed as a police procedural had it not been for the ugliness of the settings created by the brilliant cinematography of Darius Khondji and Fincher's own vision --- I have rarely seen so much rain in a film which is always a good companion for dark subject matter which this has galore.A 'secret ingredient' given to the film which contributes so much to the style of the film, not noir at all, is 'bleach bypass' ---- a chemical process that gives the film its tonal quality. Some might say 'depressing settings' --- yes, but the whole plot is about the antagonist viewing the world as morally decaying and his actions were to try to arrest that decline. In all honesty I couldn't see that Fincher disputed that view held by Kevin Spacey's serial killer. Even his retiring detective, Morgan Freeman, had given up all hope and viewed people in their worst light, and clearly we saw examples of the Press desperately picking on the bones of the latest celebrity lawyer murdered and nonchalant cops zealously inviting detectives to view the scene of a new outrage.Only Brad Pitt's idealistic younger detective remained optimistic and committed but even his sanity was tested terribly by the end and I will not give away any further spoilers. You probably know the final scene as this was made in 1995, some 25 years ago and the film stands the test of time beautifully.Personally I never found the film uplifting in any way but I've lost count of the number of times that I've seen it which probably says something about my own viewing habits. Every time I see it I hear or see something missed previously, perhaps like a person who might view a classic painting in a gallery several times. There are some paintings that are graphically grotesque and in many ways so is 'Se7en', available in dozens of versions currently.English subtitles, the 2 disc version is special with so much on offer on the 2nd disc.Sound is also specially good on the Entertainment In Video version.

Masterpiece
This film is 25 years old and still one of the absolute best in its category. Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Gwyneth Paltrow, and even good old Ronald Lee Ermey (rest in peace) makes for a near perfect cast that suits the twists and turns of the brilliant plot from beginning to end. Wish I could 'un-see' it so I could watch it all over again, without knowing the story in advance, but even then it is still one of those films that can be watched several times.

A dark drama but for all the wrong reasons.
Sorry, not for me this film. Despite the big name actors I found the script poor, the characters two dimensional and the scenes, dark, dismal and a strain on the eyes. Every crime scene required a torch and with most outdoor scenes it was pouring with rain. I thought the killer was as unconvincing as the rest of the script and the ending a big flat let down.

Cult movie, but uhh so nasty...
I saw that movie for the first time recently. I'd say for culture, that's "important" to see that movie, but get your heart well maintained because the murders are quite... "creative" (and horrendous) should I say. Suspense is well directed, the actors are wonderful and the ambiance remains from the start until the end. For sensitive souls (like mine): it's fine, they don't show you the murders happening but sometimes the results of them or they say aloud what happened without showing you. Hope that helps.

Thrilling!
This is a very enjoyable film for those looking to watch an exciting (and sometimes gruesome) detective story. One of the main characters is played by Kevin Spacey, so that might put some people off.I would say it is not suitable for young children, but I definitely recommend for anyone who enjoys a good thriller film.

Riveting. A must for Bradd Pitt and Morgan Freeman fan's.
Excellent story line and an unexpected ending but very, very good. Got to be one of Bradd Pitts and Morgan Freeman's best acting role's. Definitely a must.

Awful
A very boring film. Perhaps it's because Brad Pitt is in it. I have seem other films on the same wavelength with Morgan Freeman in which have been very good, but not this one. It doesn't have any tension in it.
