Good Product
While I have not read this book completely. It is a good book for those who want more insight in Report Studio, Framework Manager, Analysis Studio and etc. However, this book is not a good resource for Cognos Administrators. Administrators should stick to the Cognos documentation and resources.

Great read at any skill level
IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence: The Official Guide is definitely a different kind of technology book. It provides real-world expert advise, tips, and techniques for all different types of Cognos users. For business users and managers, this book provides straightforward information on Cognos BI concepts to empower business decisions. Even if you're experiencing Cognos for the first time, after leafing through the first few chapters, users at any level should feel comfortable navigating the Cognos interface, running analysis, scheduling reports, and even authoring some reports. For more experienced developers, this book goes above and beyond a simple reference guide, How-To document, or Knowledge Base article. Combining best practices with expert techniques in Framework Manager, Event Studio, Report Studio, and Analysis Studio, more technical users will be able to quickly deliver superior data models and unlock enhanced reporting capabilities. After reading this book, regardless of your skill level, you will improve your knowledge and understanding of the Cognos tools and environment.

Book is terrible
Some of the reviews warned me about the content of this book being inadequate but I wanted to try it anyway. They were right- this book is terrible. But I was so starved for some type of documentation I remained hopeful. Dont waste your money

Excellent and comprehensive book
Even happier that the sequel for Version 10 has been publishedThis book can be used as both a self-learning course study-book and a reference manual.

Helpful Material
This book gives you a fast overview of all aspects of Cognos and is written in language you can understand. You are going to need the Cognos reference manuals once you start developing but the book will help clear up areas the manuals do a poor job explaining.

IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence
I found the book to have a ton of useful examples on how to write reports using Cognos and on how to use some of the more complicated features. For example, creating a union in a report and how to use a Master-Detail relationship in a report. There are examples for just about everything.

The Cognos Bible
Dan Volitich has become for the Cognos book world, what Francesco Balena did for VB. The book shares my desk at work (and most of my team). The book helps and reminds me, with 15 years Cognos experience, as well as my junior developers with a year. An absolute must have!

Great Reference Tool
As a whole, this is a very well written book on what can easily so often become a very difficult and technical subject. The writing style is friendly, helpful and more importantly, relevant. As someone new to Framework Manager for example, this book really did well. I know all too well just how much work must have gone into producing such an excellent tour of what I think must be the most difficult part of any business intelligence- getting the underlying data into a meaningful format. There are two reasons why this book falls shy of 5 stars. Firstly, it gets off to a very flakey start with an overly technical view of Cognos Planning. This product has never really sat very well as part of the Business Intelligence suite....as ..well it isn't a BI product. However, it should be included as it is such an important and prolific product, I just would have liked to have seen this written in the same practical style as the rest of the book. Secondly, whilst there are numerous examples in the book (which whilst thankfully simple still adequately illustrate the points being made), there are no accompanying files at all to this book. It would have been so useful to have had some accompanying package downloads. All in all a great reference tool and a real labour of love by the author. Worth also noting that I am running Cognos 10.1.1 and this book is just as relevant, even with the tweaks IBM have made to this latest version.
