Usborne My First Reading Library 50 Books Set Collection - Read At Home

I am helping my daughter, age 6, with her reading skills using the Hooked on Phonics program, which is fantastic and really works. I bought these Usborne books as a supplement to the phonics books, as I wanted her to have plenty of reading material to read throughout the day that she found engaging. These books exceeded my expectations! The initial, beginner-level books, are formatted so that an adult reads a more detailed, difficult passage on the first page, and the little reader reads their passage on the next page. My daughter loves it and has greatly improved her reading over the last three months using Hooked on Phonics and these Usborne books. While Hooked on Phonics alone would have helped with her reading, these Usborne books have made reading time even more interesting and exciting for my daughter, as the stories take many themes interesting for kids such as pirates, animal fun, and themes from actual stories and fairytales. Also, the pictures are well-done and in color, which adds to the fun of reading without being a distraction. At the end of each story, there are a few activities designed to help your child with reading comprehension such as having them read a sentence from the story and pick out the incorrect word and replace it with the correct one from the story. In short, these books excellent and well worth the price! They have helped my daughter greatly improve her reading and have made reading something she loves to do!

This Reading Library is designed to empower your blossoming reader. It includes 22 books from Usborne Very First Reading, 12 books from Usborne First Reading Level One and 16 books from Usborne First Reading Level Two.Once your child knows 8 letter sounds and 2 irregular words, your child can read the first book in Usborne Very First Reading! You read the left page, your child reads the right. Each consecutive book adds new letter sounds which multiplies the words they can read. With each step, your child reads more and more and you will read less and less until book 8 where your child will read the entire book them self! ...with help, of course. Once finished with Very First Reading, your child will advance to Reading Level One, followed by Reading Level Two. Each book in this entire library includes puzzles at the end to ensure your child is not only reading, but understanding. Before I bought this Reading Library, I already owned Usborne Very First Reading (15 book hardback set) so I'd like to do a quick comparison. I taught my daughter to read using the Very First Reading set. I liked it so much, I thought I'd buy this Reading Library thinking that it was the same as the Very First Reading set plus Levels One and Two. First of all, the Very First Reading books were hardback; these are not. I prefer the hardback, but it's probably why these books are such a great price. Secondly, the Very First Reading books came with a guidebook for parents to know how to effectively use the books to teach their child to read. The guidebook is informative and helpful and it's a shame they didn't include it with this set, but the fact is, you don't need it to use these books or teach your child to read. Last of all, the Very First Reading set came with 15 books, whereas there are 22 Very First Reading books in this Reading Library. My daughter did great without the additional books, but they have been beneficial in teaching my son, because he needs the extra practice on the starter books. Over all, I love love love these books!

Bought for my granddaughter ehen she turned 6. She was not reading yet. She is about to have her 7th birthday on a week. She is reading now and loves the book. Her mother loves the pages at the end of the story. Comprehension questions about the story and other questions. Her younger siblings also love the books to be read to them. Only negative is that these books are written for children in Great Britain. So some of the words in the book are not used in the USA. They just call things by different names than we do. Stories are short. Just right for kids with short attention spans. They come in a sturdy storage box. The books are meant to be read in a certain order. From easy to harder words. There is advice for parents and how to use the books. I would recommend reading that information so you get the most out of the books. They are more than just reading a picture book.

Great phonic dual book for kids learning to read. My 4 year old loves that we can read together and it helps build confidence! She was bored of the typical phonics no storyline books that focused more on site words versus the sounds in the phonic system. She loves the stories because they are so interesting and magical and full of Kings and pirates and lovely little plots. Best of all, they have different levels and fades out the dual reader part once they have mastered the first few books! Thank you Usborne!! Very happy a great buy! Will be buying the 2nd set once she masters these!

My daughter just learned to read, we started with the Bob's Book Set 1 that we got in Costco for $10, that book set is great for learning how to blend sound and simple sight words, but the stories are very simple. After finished that set (18 books), we tried this set, what a difference!!! The story line is fun, pictures are colorful, we both enjoyed the reading. However I still think starting with Bob's book is a good way to strengthen the foundation. Just Personal Opinion, there are several products that seems to do magic for beginner readers: 1. LeapFrog Letter Factory to learn the phonics, 2. Bob Books to learn basic sound combining method 3. this set increase the interest for reading.

I have a beginning first grader who wasn't very excited about reading. He knew his letters and sounds when we got the books but most books he tried to read were either too hard or so simple they didn't keep his interest. When this set arrived, he was excited by the first story "Pirate Pat" and we've been working our way through the set happily ever since. The series starts with words that only contain certain letters so you focus on those sounds only. As the series progresses it introduces new sounds and eventually letter combinations such as sh, th, ea, etc. The stories only use letters and letter combinations they have learned so far so you can sound out every word. For me this was the best part. There is no memorizing of words just learning phonics the right way. Perhaps the best part of these stories is that the first stories in the series are broken up into one page for the adult to read and then one page for the learning reader to read. Reading a whole book at first was tiring and overwhelming but once these books arrived and we shared reading the story my son loved reading with these books. The adult reading pages allow for much more interesting stories. I felt like most very beginning reading stories were pretty boring but these are great. As the series progresses there is less text for the adult to read until eventually the learning reader reads the whole book with no adult text. It very clear what you read vs. what your child reads. As you can see in the picture you read the smaller text and you child reads the larger, bold text. I have only used these with my son, but I think the stories would be equally interesting for a girl or a boy. I plan to start my next child with this set right from the start of his reading. You really don't need any other books if you are trying to teach your child to read. I couldn't recommend these more!

Very nice illustrations. Puzzle exercises on the back of the book is very good for beginner reader to learn and develop. The learning words are very well designed, too. Stories are also interesting enough to appeal to my 5-year old. He actually wants to read them. Better than the Bobs in my opinion. I'd highly recommend it.

These were the perfect motivation for my kiddo to finally learn to read. We'd tried all kinds of early readers and nothing quite motivated him. But he's a bit of a competitive completionist, so I gave him this set about 4 weeks before 1st grade started and challenged him to read as many as he could before first grade. He tore through them. And the progression was perfect in terms of slowly building in difficulty and helping him gain in confidence. He ended up reading like 1.5 hours a day and finished all of them before first grade started. Definitely recommend! We also got the next Usborne red box set "My Reading Library" for the fall. It picked up nicely where these left off.

It is a good set of books to get started with reading for sure. My kid likes it a lot. But one star less for the quality of books. The book are soft binded and would not last long. Let me see how it goes.

I bought these books for my grand daughter who, due to the very slow pace of learning to read at school, was disengaging. She quickly skipped past the very early readers, loves the stories and is eager to complete the end of book activities. Now reading level 2 books enthusiastically. Highly recommend.

A great selection of books to help with reading for a 5-6 year old. Well illustrated with a 'quiz' at the back of the book to consolidate learning.
