Great piece of base layer to own
Since I discovered what base layer is and how to keep warm with different layering, I’ve stopped buying thick heavy expensive woolly clothing which weighs heavy on my shoulders and body causing ache everywhere. I love this Helly Hansen base layer because it fits my body very well, it's fitting but not too tight. I bought 3 sets on 2 occasions during sales and wear them on their own as everyday wear and as PJs, as well as a base layer for running both in summer and winter. They dry really fast, is really light, soft, warm against the skin, and really don’t smell! (3-4day wear). I am a size 8.5 and 5’1” in height, I bought the XS, it’s hugging fit but gets looser after a few wash and use, which becomes just right. My second order the pants seemed a bit smaller, shorter and tighter, not sure if I’ve put on weight? But the wash should loosen and lengthen it a bit. I don’t use the pants as much but they do come in handy as a base layer for when the weather’s really cold (below 5) and you’re wearing Summer leggings or thin trousers. Unless you’re up on a mountain in freezing winter or in Alaska, it’s really all you need to keep your bottom half warm. I would only go for the additional merino if I was buying the top. The only cons to this item, it might not fit everyone as the wrist and ankle bands are particularly small. I happened to have smaller than average wrists and ankles so it was perfect for me. Even then, I find it slightly annoying as I couldn’t pull up my sleeve when doing the dishes or washing my face, and taking the pants off is quite a battle when it's fairly new until it loosens up a bit. Then, it becomes just perfect to wear :-)

Warm but a tight fit, Large not large enough for ankle fit
Could probably have ordered size larger, maybe my own guesstimate wrong. Defo order size larger, there's tight then can't get your ankle thru without toooo much stretch. Done.

Good HH quality but pants run small with tight cuffs at the ankle - could be tricky with ski boots!
Bought this two-piece set as it seemed like good value as I already have some of the HH Dry tops which are great as a base layer for running. However, the XS small pants were quite a small fit (I'm usually a size 6-8 or XXS/XS), particularly at the cuffs at the ankle. This could be an issue if you're planning on buying the pants as a base layer for skiing - the cuffs were so tight that I couldn't roll them up very high above the ski boots so I spent the day feeling like my circulation was getting cut-off! In the end I wore the Helly Hansen Womens Lifa Warm Pant - Black, X-Small most days, which were FAR more forgiving without the tight cuffs (but more expensive and warmer).

Base layer , not a thermal layer
This will keep you comfortable but you'll need the fleece and outer shell to feel warm
