Dope Sick

I read this book in one sitting. It was an easy read even though it had a lot of dark shadows. It was a request from one of my 8th grade boys, so I wanted to read it before I put on our library shelf. I was a little shocked that the main character was involved with heavy drugs at such an early age. The main character finds himself in a vacant building and encouters someone he does not know. This encounter is a bit strange. However, as in most of Myer's books, he is forced to look inside himself and make better choices after a very scary night. Dopesick could open up a great discussion among young adult readers!

The premise is great, and I like the idea of sending a lesson about the dangers of drug abuse, blindly trusting individuals, and not taking school seriously. However, the writing is weak. You can tell the author is trying to sound authentic to how he thinks some teens speak, but it falls flat and sounds dated, too. I could see how some young people might even find it insulting. Furthermore, for such a short book, Myers finds a way to drag the story out; this could have easily been a twelve-page short story. Finally, you really have to suspend your disbelief in order to enjoy the plot. It's possible, but difficult. I expected better.

I've read this book about 4 times in my life. The first time I was in high school. It still touches me to this day and I look at it as a life lesson. Everything action and decision has consequences. Absolutely love the delivery of the ultimate message.

Interesting story from a prolific author.

The book was great. But the ending was kind of sucked. Walter Dean Myers should make this book a novel.

I usually cant read books mostly because they are too boring and they can't hold my attention long enough but this one did! This was an exciting book that I actually liked.

Years ago I found this book in high school when going down the wrong path, and it really left an impact on me. It made me think about what I wanted to be in life at a young age. Glad I found this book when I did
