A group of grad students have booked upon the fishing trawler Harbinger, to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Uses the amazing practical effects used in 'The Thing' (2011) before they were replaced with bad CGI
It's important to know why 'Inanimate' AKA 'Harbinger Down' looks like 'The Thing'. The only negative reviews I see of it complain that it seems to be a low budget rip off of 'The Thing'. 'Inanimate' was made to show the original practical effects used in 'The Thing' (2011) until they were badly CGI'd over at the last minute before release. If you look on YouTube you can find interviews from 'The Thing' (2011) talking about how practical effects were being used and how important the practical effects were. There's also footage released by the practical effects company who worked on 'The Thing' (2011) after they received criticism for the lack of practical effects. This behind the scenes footage shows that they made all the practical effects, and they looked amazing, but the studio stepped in last minute and changed it to CGI. As far as I'm aware, the practical effects team didn't know all their work had been replaced with CGI until they saw it at the premier. As I understand it a full practical cut of 'The Thing' (2011) does exist, but the studio released the CGI version. 'Inanimate' was made to show the practical effects, so it has to be similar to 'The Thing' in order to use those practical effects. It's really a film for people who want to see how good the effects in 'The Thing' (2011) would have looked if the studio hadn't decided to CGI over the practical effects. If you've seen 'The Thing' you know what you're gonna get with 'Inanimate', and I imagine if I'd seen it without knowing why it was made I'd give it a lower rating thinking I'd rather be watching 'The Thing' (1982). But knowing why it was made gave me the opportunity to appreciate it more.

Bad actors fight a silly blancmange monster aboard an unconvincing boat
You'd think a squishy tentacle monster offing fishermen in gory ways would be entertaining, but it's not. It's just dull. It's John Carpenter's The Thing without the tension or excitement. The worst part is that the monster just isn't interesting, and that's a cardinal sin when it comes to creature feature movies.I got about 90% of the way through before realising that I just didn't care how it ended and came to the conclusion that writing the review would be far more entertaining than finishing the movie.Avoid.

A treat for fans of good practical effects
Gillis and Woodruff set out with a goal in mind, to make a horror film without using any major CGI at all, in response to how Universal digitally replaced all work they previously did on The Thing (2011) going as far as to use traditional stop motion techniques and miniatures. The film itself was completely crowdfunded on Kickstarter and produced by a very small group on the extremely limited budget that they had, so Is the film amazing? no, is the acting amazing? definitely not but if you're a fan of 80's B movies or practical effects you will enjoy this. Visually it's a treat to watch and I wish more studios would allow more practical effects in production

Rubbish
Boring film with a lot of cliche plots and stereotypes. However, the most obvious fail is the black woman. We are to believe that a group of scientists co-oped a lobster fishing vessel. There are three women one of whom is a black. They are in the middle of the arctic with snow flurries all around and this black woman is out in it with NO HAT on her head, yet everyone else have head covering on. she is the only black woman there out in the snow with no head covering on. On top of that, she is wearing a high heel boot on a FISHING VESSEL. She also goes to sleep with a giant pink eye mask on, but yet again, NO SLEEP CAP on. So, not logical. The costume and research department fail on their job with this one.

budget "remake"
Other reviews have correctly noted the similarity between this film and (both versions of ) The Thing. If you expect this to be a multi million "remake"/prelude like the 'prelude' you will be disappointed. If you enjoy tense, claustrophobic creature features then you will probably enjoy this a lot

Enjoyable Film. Worth Watching on a Cold Afternoon
This film was intentionally made without CGI - fun movie, lots of suspense, deliberate reference to other movies by way of tribute.Favourite line has to be "we need a bigger bucket" when trying to ward off the creature with ***** ******** Not everyone makes it outof there alive, but they thought on their toes, showed tremendous courage under stress. All in all an entertaining movie to watch ona cold afternoon in January. Definitely worth watching.

Actually quite a scary movie. I Could not get my mind off it for several hours afterwards, Which for me, Is a a good sign
Actually quite a scary movie. I Could not get my mind off it for several hours afterwards, Which for me, Is a good sign of a well made movie. The acting skills of Lance Henriksen are second to none, I was pleased to see him back, And a little older from his past alien movies. Some of the shots are quite hard to see, Where the lighting is not bright enough, But from what i did see, An excellent evening sit down horror film to satisfy that urge to get creeped out whilst eating your dinner.

Okay movie
If you like a movie like the thing, this movie is for one. It is not the same level as the thing as it is an original, but if you ignore some cheap scenes, you can enjoy this movie too. My recommendation would be to watch it, maybe then buy it and have something next to The Thing movie
