Dimplex Elda ELD20E Optiflame Electric Fire with Real Coal

Having had an old gas fire taken out that was never used we bought this fire to just really fill a hole in the existing marble fire surround - it arrived on time when expected and was well packaged - we actually needed a fire with no insert as my husband had actually blocked up the existing hole where the gas fire had been removed - most fires we found needed the hole to sit the new fire in but Dimplex seem to sell fires with fillers in this particular case it is actually attached to the fire about 2 inches wide to the sides and top and does look like pArt of the fire but it can be removed if you want the fire to sit in an opening so the fire in effect just sits on the hearth and is flush with the back panel - it comes with white pebbles and black coals you can use either - we preferred the white pebbles - there were just about enough and we could have done with a few more really but it looks fine - I painted the existing mahogany fire surround in white eggshell paint and the wall is grey and I must say it looks fab and it saved lots of money by not having to have a whole new fire surround - it took a lot of time and patience mind you but after being stuck with an ugly gas fire for 15 years it does look a completely different room

Looks really good in my slate surround and is very quiet. Would recommend to anyone.

Had to be returned as it was damaged on arrival. The sizes given on the ad were incorrect so it wouldn't have fit anyway.

I bought this fire online and had a problem when I first turned it on as the cellophane-wrapped instruction booklet had been packed under the orange coal bed. The heat from the bulbs set the package on fire so smoked billowed from underneath the hood. Luckily I caught it in time and no lasting damage was done to the fire or my sitting room. Apparently the instructions are usually taped on top of the product - I was just unfortunate with my experience.I use my central heating to heat the room so I have only ever used the light switch on the dimplex. For this reason I was very disappointed when a loud screeching noise emitted when I turned the flame effect on at Christmas, after only 19 months. It was an expensive outlay for such a short time of looking pretty. Warranty only 1 year. My electrician has repaired it for time being but doesn't hold out much hope for it long term without an expensive return to Dimco's service engineers. As I say a great looking fire but a disappointingly short-lived performance considering the light use it has received since purchase.
