Decent if you like found footage
I enjoy found footage horror movies, so thought I would give this one a try. Although it is clear from the outset that this is very low budget, I think it is a pretty original take on the genre and I enjoyed it. If you don't like found footage this is highly unlikely to convert you, but if you enjoy the genre I think it is a pretty decent film.

A little gem...
When Simon, Richard, and Eva head out on an eagerly anticipated road trip, Simon brings along a video camera to record their journey. What starts out as an adventure slowly becomes a descent into the ominous as unexplained events threaten to disrupt the three close friends. Each one of them must struggle with personal demons and paranoia as friendships are tested and realities are revealed And recorded......First off, this isn't a found footage movie. If the viewer takes careful consideration into the movie, the footage was never lost.Other than that, this is a remarkable entry into the horror/paranormal genre. For a film that appears to be made on a tight budget, it's very well done. it's running time is to it's credit, as we do not have to wait an age for the scares to emerge, unlike other movies like this such as parasnoremal inactivity. But what this film has to offer, is that it doesn't offer the ending on a plate to the viewer, it's a film that you really have to think about after seeing it, and even do a little research on it, like I did myself. It's a very hard to find movie though, I was lucky enough to find it the other night, and i'm glad I did.The film has some genuine scares during it's running time, particularly the running in the field scene. The main protagonists though are very annoying at times, and really grate, and it does take the edge off the film a little. But for something to come out of nowhere like this, to shock, and to make you think, it's well worth seeing, and i'm looking forward to seeing what the director has to offer next.

If looks could kill...
**** Warning Spoilers ****Skew is a low budget but competent and pretty compelling twist on the old found footage theme. Simon, Rich, and Eva set out on a road trip. There's clearly some tension between them from the start (which is explained later on) and things become gradually more nightmarish as the tale progresses, all filmed by the increasingly paranoid Simon. Some of the people he films seem to have their faces macabrely distorted. This portends that they are not long for this world. Simon makes the link between his camcorder and the proliferation of deaths, but is it the camera, is it Simon, or a combination of the two? During a long monologue, Simon lets slip that his parents would not allow any cameras or photographs in the house, so that hints very strongly that there is some sort of inherited family curse at play here. Things become increasingly creepy, with a couple of genuine make-you-jump moments, but a couple of scenes (at the police station and the enigmatic character running through the field at an impossible speed) left me rather baffled. The ending, in flashback, was kind of fitting and made sense of a scene partway through, which had previously left me scratching my head.Be aware though that the plot is a fairly complex one and the director never spoon-feeds you, so you need to pay close attention to get your head around what's going on. Overall, this is a competent and stylish supernatural horror film that keeps you guessing until the end. Well worth a look.

A bit too clever for its own good
There seems to be an explosion of films coming out in this genre, POV, or "found footage" - although this ISN'T found footage, and was made in 2005, before the current boom. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the film, which is obviously a low budget affair. There are some sound performances from the three main actors, the direction is crisp and efficient, and there are one or two genuinely scary moments. It has a slow burning chill to it, and thankfully, the special effects that are included are used sparsely, but effectively. There is, however, one major flaw to this film - you need an IQ of about 150 to truly understand it! Many will find the ending utterly infuriating, as it seems to make no sense at all, at least on the surface. If you get this film first time, good for you, because I didn't really get it (hence four stars instead of five) - although I still enjoyed the film. Sounds confusing? Watch the film for yourself and come to your own conclusions. There's a brilliant article on the internet with the director himself giving an explanation of the plot in great detail - just Google "Seve Schelenz explains Skew". I trust anyone with a brain (obviously NOT "Battleship" and "John Carter" fans) will do this AFTER they have watched the film!

SKEWED UP AND A WASTE OF TIME
These hand camera movies are the pits, annoying to say the least, and the dialogue is at best thought up on the spot...I was on the side of the girl who said take that camera away....it lacked direction and budgetwise someone must have said we've got a few dollars and we must make a movie to prove we can con the film moguls...it had no opening credits...just wafting into the handheld camera....and who walks around with a camera constantly on and babbling on about this and that intermingled with getting the girl on camera like a soft porn inset.....and the horror, I never saw that, mind you at 46 minutes and not caring anymore for the three character scenario I stopped it. I'm rather pleased I picked up the 3 box set with this on for one pound....there was only one film on it I got mildly interested in.
