Michael Clayton: The Shooting Script (Newmarket Shooting Scripts) Paperback – November 12, 2007

At first blush, it may seem like a lot to spend on a movie script. But I would argue it’s the best investment any screen writer of any level of talent could make. And if you’re simply a fan of great film making, pick this up

As a semi-retired attorney, I know Michael Clayton. He fixes problems created by attorneys and clients of a large law firm. Attorneys come with all mortal and moral flaws plus some never dreamed of by those not within the legal profession. The role of Karen, the female corporate defense attorney, is so perfectly written as to describe any number of women who have risen to the top of the profession. There are many Karens in the legal field. I did not expect to enjoy the movie, but I truly did. Normally I hate to watch movies about lawyers because they are either poorly written or bring back sad memories. I want to grab the script writer and shake him or her and say, "That is not the way it is done, you idiot!" That is not true of this script.

A treat (almost a treatise) for aspiring screenwriters and serious movie fans - so many "should do's" and even a few "don't do's", with compelling description and brilliant dialogue. A great double-feature with "The Big Lebowski" script.

Genius at work. Great movie came from a great script and Gilroy is one of the best. Budding screenwriters would do well to look at this as a template of phenomenal talent and a highly intelligent script with stunningly good dialogue.

If you want to be a screenwriter, you need to read this. Gilroy breaks screenwriting conventions all the time and it always works. Amazing writer.
