WAAAAY easier than TurboTax
I've suffered with TurboTax for years and, after reading the equally dismal reviews on this year's version, looked for an alternative & bought H&R Block Premium download. If you know TurboTax I don't have to recant it's horrors.I'm a fairly simple filer: single, retired, Social Security/pension income, 1099s from Vanguard & T Rowe Price. I wanted the "auto download" feature to eliminate the hand entry process - H&R Block worked fine. Before I decided I checked if HRB would be able to upload my 2022 return using Turbo Tax - they said it would and it did - big convenience here.Way less clutter & stalls with HRB. I trusted Turbo Tax so little I would always do a paper return first as their completion process was so unfriendly. With HRB the screens & directions & completion steps were so straight forward I didn't need a paper draft.I had one minor complication as I own an international mutual fund which paid foreign tax forcing me to a Form 1116 - the software flagged it and prompted me to confirm my entries, but it worked. Here is the big shock......the above mentioned foreign tax issue stymied me a moment and I actually called their help number, guess what......they answered in under 10 minutes. I near fell off the phone. The help was for technical, which was fine as I expected it, but she did tell me a local HRB office might provide live help. Anyway if you've ever tried this with Turbo Tax you know how crazy good this is.So - per my experience this is a FAR better mousetrap. The ease of importing my prior year Turbo Tax return, the automatic retrieval of my Vanguard/T Rowe information - just the sheer absence of headaches makes me recommend this to those who want a simple life.

Easier than filing manually. Not perfect.
I have been doing my taxes by hand but I heard IRS may soon require electronic returns.Tried HRBlock premium. No problem buying on Amazon and downloading onto Windows 11 on my pc.I have various income: w-2, social security, pension, rental units, stock & REIT investments, dividends, inheritance this year (k-1). Also was partially enrolled in Health Insurance Marketplace.I found the software saved me a ton of work. For example I was able to have itdownload all of my tedious 1099 miscellaneous data from my brokerage firm (they cando this for Charles Schwab, Vanguard, Fidelity. Maybe others?) .The software does all of the tedious calculations and worksheets behind the scenes. You can jump around to different steps, or examine any tax forms or worksheets it fills out during the process. Just pay attention to whether you are in Federal or State section. It’s best if you have some familiarity with the tax aspects of your investments. For example, my rentals are condo units. The HOA fees are fully deductible, but the softwaredid not ask for these so I entered them under Other Deductions. Also it did not know that in my state we pay an excise tax on rental income, so I had to enter that myselfto get the deduction. The software is fairly intuitive and streamlined, but you must be comfortable using online tools andhave some knowledge of what is going on. Otherwise better to have a tax person file your returns.Software got stuck on some worksheet details, I ended up deleting them to move on.(Note: do NOT DELETE any worksheets, later I found out it deletes the related tax forms too!)Have not used any other software but I heardTurbotax is much more detailed (and cumbersome) but might offer more hand holding.I plan to use HR Block software again next year, I’m done doing them manually.I filed electronically. For federal it was free, state was $20. No more paper printing and mailing chores.

A Horrible and Costly Experience
Used H&R software before w/o issue, so when TurboTax forced you to have an online account to use their software, I bought the Mac H&R Deluxe+state+efile edition Amazon promoted. BIG mistake:1. The app kept trying to install the same update over & over. Went to website and directly downloaded the update DMG and used that2. Even thought the "About" menu showed it registered properly and I should have had it for free, after entering all my data it forced me to purchase the State package for another $40. Even after use "app Cleaner" to remove the software and re-install it3. Even after that it would not run. Kept asking me to re-purchase state package. My credit card eventually denied the repeat purchases as fraud4. Support never ansered the my call.5. I purchased and doloaded a different Deluxe+state version from NewEgg for $70, removed the old, and had the same update and state purchase issue.6. Decided to file the Federal return and worry about State later. It decided to charge me for that as well (although the Internet says those charges won't settle). After 2 hours of hitting the SEND button and getting "Bad Gateway" responses I gave up. Debated whether to send paper copies to the IRS instead.6. Purchased TurboTax (another $82 spent), re-entered all my data, downloaded the state forms, eFiled both - all w/o incident. BTW Both apps resulted in the same refunds.Final cost to me was fae greater than filing for an extension, plus no sleep all night. Never buying H&R again.
