El Mariachi (Special Edition)

This early work is out of the ballpark better than what came next.
Robert Rodriguez brings a simple beautiful story to the screen in El Mariachi. A naive traveling singer becomes the victim of mistaken identity with a dangerous man. It's innocent, thrilling, romantic, heartbreaking, and hopeful. Carlos Gallardo really made the movie in his role as the mariachi. I saw the later works of Rodriguez including Desperado, the sequel to El Mariachi. It ruined the whole feel of the 1st one. It was so simple, low budget, nothing flashy. But they brought in Antonio Banderas as the singer, and it was Hollywood from that moment until the credits. Boo Hiss!! Bring back Carlos Gallardo and the small Mexican town where they filmed.

I've read a lot about this film, about Robert ...
I've read a lot about this film, about Robert Rodriguez and his book Rebel Without a Crew. I was in the motion picture industry for over 25 years as a writer, producer, director but mostly as a cameraman. I am critical of every film and show that I watch not only from a technical point of view ("Did you see that boom shadow?) but from a story structure ("He wouldn't have done that!") and my wife has told me that she will not watch a movie with me unless I shut the hell up. This film was willed into existence by Robert. He did it for $7,000. and that's not a typo. The companion piece to this film is Rebel Without a Crew which is a daily journal written by Robert about how he raised the money (selling his body for medical research) and how he shot the film on 16mm with a non-synchronous,non-blimped borrowed camera. If you are a film aficionado read the book FIRST then watch the movie and afterwards your only comment will be "Holy s***, he pulled this off." Bravo Roberto!

Five Stars
The Best movie ever for a Film Student! If you ever wanted to be a filmmaker director or film writer this is the place to start. Celebrity Director Robert Rodriquez launches his film career and demonstrates what can be done on a micro budget in a short period of time. He made this movie intending to be released on the Mexican video rental market and ends up selling it to Columbia Pictures and his debut film gets a theatrical distribution deal. No need for film school simply watch El Mariachi over and over including the directors cut and you will know everything you need to know to start making movies by next month!

It had some good things, amateurish acting too many shots going back ...
It's mixed. It had some good things, amateurish acting too many shots going back and forth between people's faces that are having a conversation.Despite the violence, it had a tongue-in-cheek quality. It was kind of silly so it should have had a happy ending, but It had a terrible ending that spoiled the entire story for me. The ending was tongue-in-cheek too, but it was too stupid of a way to end after all the near misses the main character escaped from. It was entertaining until the end and then you felt cheated of the happy ending..

Good story!
Can be a little cheesy, especially with the acting and the way the movie was made. What makes it worth watching is the story. It was actually written pretty good. Saw it as a kid, but watching it now felt awkward watching it. But the story is what really got me. Its a good concept the had, especially for the sequels they made. I consider this like the origin story.

A classic tale of wrong place, wrong guy.
Everything you would expect from a Robert Rodriguez movie.Sexy girls, guns, comedy and gore.Though this one has the special point of being done only of first takes. Which means what you see are the actors living a scene for the first time each time. And as such, there is a very nice sense of realism that comes out of it.
