Julien Duvivier takes on morality, virtue and religion in seven tales inspired by the Ten Commandments. The stories are by turn farcical, touching and thought-provoking, as befits a director with the range of Duvivier. Essayed by a truly all-star cast, the film depicts a range of sins from minor to major. There's the first one in which Michel Simon curses up a blue sky which proves quite embarrassing as he works in a nunnery. This is followed by a tale in which a stripper’s home life proves to be a lot less sexy than her job would indicate. The third is a grim story of a Jesuit novice (Charles Aznavour) who denies his vows in order to avenge his sister’s suicide. Fernandel turns up in the next story about a man who brings a harmony to a community by proclaiming himself to be God. The fifth tale relates the story of a man (Alain Delon) who finds that his mother is not who he thinks she is, but is in realty a movie star (Danielle Darrieux). Next up is a lesson in trading infidelities and jewels. The film’s finale is a farce featuring Jean-Claude Brialy and Louis de Funès in a fight over stolen cash.
