This is my first C-suite role. I have to say that over other things I'm inspired.Douring the book, and as a tech role, I could imagine the implications of a c-suite role, this case was the CTO, but one step further, its quite the challenge the path, from been hired, survive and then make the impact day to day.I personally gain perspective to the managerial side of technology. The challenges, the view, strategy, networks, among others. All matters in terms of make the expected impact and beyond. We must be clear that every role in the company is important. In this case thanks to the author to put the tremendous effort and give us the key tips in order to know, but also to rock in this tech role. Solid Book for Aspiring & Practicing CTOs
I have been a software engineer, architect, VPE and CTO is companies ranging from start-ups to large public companies. I wish I had this book 15 years ago, as I had to learn many of its lessons the hard way - through many attempts and many failures. While no one book is a recipe for guaranteed success, I think Etienne does a great job at describing a framework for avoiding major mistakes and ultimately succeeding as a valuable member of a C-suite team.

Great meta information
I've seen a number of Etienne's talks over the year, but wasn't sure what types of content he'd compile in book form. To my delight, it's chock full of "meta" information on the role of CTO. Besides the obligatory advice on technology strategies, priorities and roadmaps, he provides a lot of insight on establishing networks, providing consulting services to aid your network, and even how to navigate the delicate dance of C-suite interview processes. As someone earlier in my career, this kind of advice from an experienced CTO is incredibly valuable!A lot of business-related books are full of fluff and filler, in a vain attempt to flesh out a blog post or two into a full-length book. CTO Excellence is not one of those books. de Bruin gets straight to the point, with a spare use of diagrams and even several worksheets to help digest the information and apply it to your own business.Overall, this book is a lot more helpful to me than the classic "Manager's Path" tome that touches on some of the same topics covered more extensively, and clearly, here. For me, this is definitely a reference book to remain on the shelf--not a one-and-done read.

Captures the varied aspects of what CTOs must be good at
There are a lot of checklist-y management books out there and this is not one of them. Etienne manages to capture the breadth of the scope of the CTO role and provide meaningful and actionable insights that helps growing CTOs plan for how to continue their learning path. A CTO at a small startup will necessarily be a different role than a CTO at a mid-sized scale-up but both will find the contents of this book useful.I've been a fan of Etienne's work for many years and what I appreciate about him the most is the emotional intelligence and awareness he brings to the many challenges that we as engineering leaders face. This facet of him shines through in the book in a way that I hope will guide others in how they can better lead their teams and companies.

A refreshed perspective on the role of CTO
I've been a CTO for the better part of 12 years. As my last stint as a CTO has been coming to a close, I've seriously considered moving into another role in the technology space. Being a CTO is hard and takes a lot of energy, self-reflection, and context-switching. I suppose many roles are the same, but reading this book has given me a refreshed perspective and some new insights on what I may do differently the next time in order to better handle some of the challenges. If you've already been a CTO or aspire to be one, there are certain to be many learnings you can take from this book. Well worth the spend!

Utter Drivel!
Create a journal, have EQ, build contacts, help people with the printer, keep a log of people who you like/ dislike and why… this utter drivel takes up the bulk of the book. It’s not fit for someone starting as an IT admin, let alone taking on a role as a CTO!The book speaks more to the authors lack of confidence, an inability to interact socially and the need to be liked than it does about anything IT related. They say you should never buy a book by its cover. Well, this book has a nice cover. If you took the cover away, you’d honestly have no idea that this was meant to be a book on CTO Excellence.Absolute waste of money and time!
