A great, short, easy-to-read introductory book on BIM implementaiton in the UK; ideal for students
First of all I would like to highlight that I know the author. I promised I would give an opinion of the book, and I promised it would be honest. The following is my truly honest opinion.I have read the book pretty much cover to cover, and I generally find it to be a great introduction to BIM implementation in the UK. After an introduction of the background (needs for BIM) and important concepts of information management, Prof. Kumar then reviews key components of BIM project implementation in the UK. Some of these are reviewed in more detail in dedicated chapters: PAS 1192-Part2, BIM BEP, and BIM contractual documents. It seems fair that they receive more in-depth attachment as they are indeed important. The main strengths of this book is that it covers the dense subject of BIM implementation in the UK in a reasonably short book, without omitting important aspects, and it does this using easy-to-read English. It also significantly reuses figures and graphics found in official documents, like the relevant BIM standards, which is great because it eases the transition of the reader from this introductory book to those more detailed documents. I should add that the quality of the print is good, and the use of colours makes the reading very pleasant.Overall, I find this book a great way to step into the BIM world, and I would argue that it is great for students (there is even a chapter on developing a BIM training framework which could support both academic training, but also professional training). I lecture BIM myself and I have developed teaching content that pretty much fully aligns with this, and I can see how the book could complement my presentations. The only issue with this book is that, when it was prepared BIM was still in a state of flux. The main implication of this is that recent developments do not appear in this version, in particular PAS1192-Part5 on security. These (few) missing or incomplete parts should not give the impression that the book is already irrelevant. This is absolutely not the case, and I still recommend it. As of mid-2016, the different components of BIM implementation in the UK shall be settled. Therefore, I hope an updated version of this book will appear soon after, so that it fully covers everything. My students would then even better benefit from it.
