My favorite Jonathan Edwards biography!
I am not a theologian by any means but I am fascinated by the life of Jonathan Edwards and his family. This biography was exactly what I have been looking for, detailed enough to be well documented but written in such a way that it is easy and enjoyable to read.I particularly like the way the author compares the lives of Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin. It is an interesting account of men born in similar circumstances and education but who go on to live very different lives... one becoming one of the best known Christians of his day and the other choosing the modern teaching coming from Europe.I downloaded it on my Kindle but purchased the paperback edition as a gift for a family member (who is a true theologian). I'd recommend reading Marriage to a Difficult Man to get a further account of the importance of his wife and children to his life.

Excellent.
I learned so much from this book. Even though it's the "short life" version of Marsden's larger work, it is perfect for someone who wants to get a glimpse into the life of Edwards and the world he lived in. Especially recommended for busy people who don't have much spare time to read another 300 pg. book (I'm currently a full time minister, husband, dad, and seminary student). In addition, unlike many historians, Marsden writes in a very engaging and enjoyable style. I was surprised at how much I just enjoyed reading this book. Highly Recommend.

A short but good intro. to JE.
A good introduction to the life and writings of Jonathan Edwards who is perhaps one of the best theologians America has ever had.

Scholarly, with no affections.
I bought the Audible version of this work to listen on a road trip. The reader was fine. My trouble with the author is that he is so critical of Edwards that it seems like he has no affection for his life or work. This is a *cold*, scholarly account or Edwards' life and work. I find that so hard to stomach since Edwards reaches so far into Heaven that I find it difficult not to be moved in one's affections. If you're looking for information on Edwards' life, Marden's A Shorty Life of Jonathan Edwards is a good place to start. If you have had some interactions with Edwards and want to eat the same manna he did though, you may want to look elsewhere. You're not likely to be edified. Perhaps I was spoiled by Arnold Dallimore's treatment of Whitefield which not only familiarized me with the man but helped me love the God he preached so well. This was my first biography I've read of Edwards, but I think I'll look to Ian Murray's Jonathan Edwards: A New Biography next.

A short and worthwhile read of Edwards' life.
For anyone wanting to learn more about the man behind the God-centered theology, this short book is a wonderful introduction to the consistency of Edward's life and vision.

A Great Introduction to Edwards
A great intro to Jonathan Edwards, his life, work, ministry and writings. Marsden has a fuller biography of Edwards (Johnathan Edwards - A Life; 640 pages) but tghlyhis at 152 pages, will wet your appetite to pursue further reading of this remarkable man and theolgian. Marsden's writing style is easy and flowing and so wonderful for just getting immersed into the story. Highly recommended.
