Basic, and all the better for it.
As the title of this book suggests, it is suitble for the beginner seamsters out there - someone who is fairly new to sewing and wants to be guided through a project of their own (this has no projects included inside) from beginning to end. It covers the basic information about the materials, machines, tools, How to lay your patterns, how to cut out the fabric and so forth. But it only cover the basics (this is a strength in a way, as it doesn't drown the learner with information they don't need yet) - if your own project is complicated and you want specific advice, you won't find any help here. It's not an in-depth encyclopedia, but a good introduction to those who might want to try out sewing for themselves. On a side-note, I found the picture a bit dark and gloomy - it made it a bit difficult to see the fine detail at times.

a lifeline offered
I know that I am not the target market for this book (bloke/lives in shed when wife wants him out of house/real ale drinker) but it is a skill that most blokes should be able at least know the basics about sewing. It does go through the basics very well and I know that the skills I learnt in the boy scouts and refreshed here will come in useful. It has however convinced me that I do not want a sewing machine and also I wish the book had a plain cover so it could hide among the car manuals on the book shelf.....Sadly the book is very good as I was wanting to use the pun:what's the book like? sew - sew (hmm, I'll get my coat)
