I See the Sun in Nepal (2)

I didn’t realize this book would also be in Nepali. It was a nice bonus.

This is the 4th time I've ordered I See the Sun in Nepal. About 2 years ago I had the opportunity to get to know several refugee families from Nepal/Bhutan. Sharring this delightful, simple story has given moms who do not read English the opportunity to read to their child. Middle school students like being able to read it in both languages, explaining the Nepali to the younger children. Adults are excited to expand on the daily life as discribed and contrast it with the life in refugee camps. I learned some basic words, but most importantly for me, it gave me information on which to formulate questions. The beautiful illistrations also provided a starting point for converstations. My new friends were thrilled that someone had the interest and love of peoples to write such a book.

I am learning Nepali, and I think this book is a good children's book AND a great way to learn Nepali. It has both simple Nepali sentences with the English translation. The pictures are creative and helpful also.I would recommend.

Trekkers should buy copies of this book and take them to Nepal. Many schools have no access to library books; the teachers are thrilled to get books for their children.

I bought this as a gift for a Nepali couple I know, living in the states, who have a baby daughter. I liked that the text is both in Nepali and English, so they can read both to her, and the story is simple and sweet, likely to be very appealing. For some reason I felt it was very nice but not totally charming (like a "Goodnight Moon"), hence my 4 stars. My other wish is that the book was available in hardcover, not just paperback, because I think hardcover is so much more durable, and has a better feel in the hand when reading aloud. I'm guessing the text is actually ideal for a preschooler, maybe a 3 - 5 year old.

This is a nice little book. The story is simple with lots of repeated vocabulary to make for a great language primer. The translation is not exact, so some words are not as easily discernible as others. I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn to read Nepali.
