Classic rock, modern sound
Tak Matsumoto is one of the most popular guitarists in Japan - which means no-one's heard of him elsewhere. For this project he's got the vocalist from Mr Big (Eric Martin), the bass player/songwriter from Night Ranger (Jack Blades) and together they've written an album of classic rock songs to show those young pretenders oout there how it should be done. It's received rave reviews from those in the industry that care, and hopefully it'll do well.Bits of Mr Big and Night Ranger are hinted at, but essenntially this is solid rock, with a bit of a modern feel (dropped tunings), strong melodies, and good guitar solo's like they used to play in the '80's. And this is where a lot of people will find this CD refreshing - this isn't a shred jerk-off CD, the solo's are well crafted, not too OTT, and fit nicely into the structure of the songs. Tak can shred with the best of them, but restrains himself to a few moments, and otherwise prefers a melodic approach.Heavier than Night Ranger, more straightforward than Mr Big - worth a listen.
