Worth it - but disappointing...
The articles in this book are definitely worth the read but I was surprised that this catalogue of an exhibition that ostensibly celebrates 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of gay male sex in the UK would have such a lesbian focus. Lesbians were not criminalised under the UK legal system. That said, we were all living in the shadows, so it is right that a modern exhibition looks at both lesbian and gay male art. But there are startling omissions and a very definite preference for female nudes. The male nudes are coy in comparison and I have the feeling that the curator of the exhibition was just a bit nervous about male sexuality and the penis. A missed opportunity on many levels, but an important exhibition none the less.A pity that many of the reproductions are so small.
