Ant Colony

A tad overrated.
I thought it was interesting enough. But I didn't love it near as much as everyone else seemed to.

An Intriguing Graphic Novel
An intriguing novel that I went into without any expectations and came out very satisfied. This comic is bizarre, edgy, surreal, and at the core of it, is about the intricacies of different types of male-male relationships: a) paternal b) fraternal and c) sexual; as told by ants. Alternatively, it can just be read as story about a bunch of ants à la Antz albeit directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. The artwork, frequently containing solid, single-panel backgrounds with dull colors, grew on me quickly. DeForge manages to mix it up by placing surreal, psychedelic art at odd intervals as well. The main protagonists of the story evolve from three different sets of black ants living in a colony that is on the verge of collapse. The story in itself is about their struggles with very few triumphs. Red ants, spiders, caterpillars, earthworms, and other critters are humorously depicted as seen through the eyes of the black ants. All in all, I would recommend it if you like your dose of strange with a side serving of introspection.

Gorgeous.
I read "Ant Colony" back when it was just "Ant Comic," serialized on DeForge's blog. I loved it then, and I love it now — and I'm overjoyed to have it in this frankly beautifully-produced form. It's a hell of a lot nicer than the hack-job bootleg press of it I made back in college. My only complaint: DeForge's gorgeous bestiary/cast page (published after Ant Comic ended) is missing from this volume. This is the only flaw in an otherwise perfect publication.

My favourites.
A wild and surreal read with gorgeous art and intricate details. This is the book that got me back into comic books.

Dark.
Very unique. Great visuals. Very dark content for the barely-above-average graphic novel enthusiast.I enjoyed it, but wouldn't recommend for everybody.

I'm so happy I got it
When I bought this comic, I didn't know what to expect. I'm so happy I got it, though. Pure gold

very cool.
very nice object to own in its entirety. the color palette is simple, solid and effective. pretty much the same impact can be felt for the art and storytelling.

And now for something completely different...
The kind of fever dream you could feasibly imagine a passive-aggressive vegan hippie might have. (Absolutely nothing against any of those by the way). A quite incredibly journey into a fertile imagination, and a queasily imagined microcosm, where anything goes, including a few things you hadn't thought of before. Absolutely worth a read, though not late at night, it'll probably disturb you and leave a few unanswered questions gnawing away. Prepare yourself for the weird world of DeForge.

it's also very mature and beautiful on the graphic side
The first long narrative by DeForge is also a very powerful tale which merges a lot of DeForge's themes in a coherent and brutal setting: family issues, sexuality, body perception / metamorphosis, weird and haunting worldbuilding, hopelessness... it's also very mature and beautiful on the graphic side. If you like the author, it's a must-have, if you don't know him yet, it's good for a start.

Great.
It's brand new, even got that new book smell. (very slight scratches and 'bruises' but this is expected from ordering a book online), Good for around £10 since in stores it's about £15.
