understanding the creed
I liked the clear explanation of the creed and many connections to scripture.I would recommend this book to all Christians. Many who are not in liturgical churches could benefit from this study.I give this book a 5 because it is biblically based and concise. I will read it again.

Very good study of the Apostle's Creed
Very well written, in-depth study of the Apostle's Creed. We're using it as a group study. The book has divided the Creed into six main sections, designed for each one to be an evening's study. Each section looks at the biblical foundations (references are found throughout), deals with some common questions, and explains ideas that may be often confusing. Then it works with the relevance of each section to daily life. Some proposed study questions are listed near the end of each chapter, followed by suggestions for further reading. To use this as a group study, it would help to do some homework, at least to read through the section before the study. The text is a little long to just read through as a group. It isn't a "fill in the blanks" study. Rather, it's a thorough discussion with a few guiding questions at the end.

Excellent resource for preachers and teachers!
This was a fantastic resource in my study of the Apostles’ Creed. McGrath’s approach is historical, biblical, and very practical. I used it for many aspects of my sermon prep and group study content. I definitely recommend this book if you’re in a study of the Apostles’ Creed!

My favorite on the Creed overall
Concise, inexpensive, nicely packaged, clearly written. And by someone who is both highly competent (Oxford prof.) and actually believes the Creed is true. The study questions at the end of each chapter, and teh non-techical approach make this idea for small group discussion or a c.e. class.Overall, this would be my first choice. For those who want more words and a slightly more pugnacious approach, also get Michale Horton We Believe. For a GREAT intro., and some other good insights, by a Catholic scholar who is less orthodox than McGrath -- Luke Timothy Johnson's new The Creed (2003) is a good second choice. For a variety of moderately liberal and neo-orthodox perspectives, and a mix of theological and sermonic materials, check out the new Van Harn, ed., Exploring and Proclaiming The Apostles' Creed (2004). But get McGrath first.

McGrath helps us to discover the jewels in the Apostles' Creed
I consider myself a well-read Christian, but McGrath has challenged me to go beyond. I frequently recited this creed before I read this book and it was meaningful back then. However, after reading this book I've come to appreciate it so much more. McGrath covers everything from the creed's history to how it can help us today. His illustrations are superb and really help you retain the information. The book itself is a perfect length; it's not to long and not too short. Moreover, McGrath, at the end of each chapter, gives the reader study questions and further reading which can be used in a group study scenario. This is a truly powerful book.

Even the Table of Contents is Inspiring!
I've only skimmed the table of co My congregation is going through the creed, and it's the first serious study I've done of it. Just looking at the Table of Contents and a few of the first pages hints of a serious read!
