good reference/intro book.
Used it as reference for a course at a local community college, keep it handy on my desk at work for a guide. I find it handy to use the index/chapters to find the information quickly (where I can then use google to find more detailed info). The writing style was very good, and very informative. I recommend this author.

Not for the novice programmer
I purchased this book based on the previous 2 reviews. And though I already have a background in VB.NET programming I found this book would most likely be too confusing for new VB programmers with no previous programming experience. All too many times they cover things that they will cover later in the book, like 20 chapters later. So you don't build any foundation on top of what you've just been told to do, not until later at least. Often times also, there are cases where you are receiving the "opinion" of the author as though it's written as fact. Reasearching some of these topics produce a variety of possible answers, specifically when dealing with WinForms vs. WPF; one technology is newer, but WinForms are not obsolete. Also, I would recommend many more hands on, practical examples, like with the Learn in 24 Hours books, also from SAMs publishing. They are much more engaging keeping you involved in the topics being covered. For someone with a good knowledge of programming and Visual Basic, it's a good resource, but a mind numbingly boring read.

Visual Basic 2012This book is phenomenal! I can truly say that I have wasted money on other VB.Net and other VB books. While other VB books tend to jump right into the programming with good examples, they don't explain what goes on behind the scene, but ask you to ignore how it works, but know that it works and put on your "I-believe hat". This only led me to become familiar with or aware of Visual Basic's capabilities and not the true programming side.Although this book is 1300+ pages, it may be intimidating and seem too much to absorb - IT'S NOT!The author takes you step-by-step explaining in detail (layman's terms) how variables work, why they work and their use - with clear examples!Excited after reading the first five chapters, I skimmed through the entire book to see what was in store. The best part is that when looking ahead, I UNDERSTOOD how the more advanced code examples intend to work!Alessandro Del Sole Is my new favorite author!.I am not associated with any book sellers, work for Microsoft, nor have I met Mr. Del Sole. This is simply a good book from which to learn Visual Basic 2012.

The best
I've read the first edition from my library...which was very good. I got this book from safaribooksonline, because I wanted to learn VB.NET for Windows 8. It might be pricy, but it covers everything, and furthermore you get a large discount

NEVER EVER COME CLOSE TO THIS BOOK
This is the book I wasted my tokens on from my safari books subscription looking at the reviews given above.Perhaps this is the worst book ever you would lay your hands on for a language as versatile as VB. Perhaps, this is because of the author not being a native english speaker. He explains a lot of things where an explanation is not needed at all. This over explanation combined with unnecessary technical fluff on .net which is available on msdn for reference makes this book very boring to read. Take the 24 hours training for vb 2012. The guy did a very good job in getting a beginner up to speed on vb there.DONT EVER consider taking this one even for rent.

Not for Beginners
If you're a robot then this book is perfect but if you're a human and you need a book to hold your hand while you learn Visual Basic then go somewhere else.

A very good reference to have at hand as one navigates
A very good reference to have at hand as one navigates .NET and Visual Basic. All aspects from the use of Visual Studio to Garbage Collection are explained. The accompanying examples are informative, and can easily be read on a tablet. This is not the book for Windows store development, but that is probably to many acceptable, as the coverage of all other topics is so comprehensive.

Ottimo Libro

Ottimo. Consigliato.
