StarTech 3-Bay 3.5in SATA SAS Trayless Backplane, 6Gbps (HSB3SATSASBA)

I originally bought two of these to enable easy swapping of drives in a backup server. They have worked flawlessly since then, running 24/7 for over a year. The build is robust and swapping out drives is very easy. I later added one to my desktop PC because I have a 24TB drive that runs very hot, but the built in fans in this enclosure also cool the drives far more than any case fan. Since moving the drive to the enclosure I have had no problem with overheating. So, great for swapping drives but also great for cooling drives.

Excellent unit, far better than the cheap one I purchased which cost more. This one works on all hard drives, but if you want to use it to run an SSD drive then you have to purchase an additional unit which mirrors an SATA hard disk. I would recommend this unit. Just connect it up and away it goes, no messing.

I bought this because I wanted a 3 in 2 with front access (I'm fed up with having to wiggle drives in and out of cases), it was in stock and startech are generally a decent brand. Good points: cage is metal and feels solid, cables and screws were included, trayless so you don't have to worry about getting extra trays or about tray compatibility between different cages. Sufficient space around the power connectors to accomodate connectors with pass-through cables. Not so good point: it barely fit in my case, the back touches one of the motherboard standoffs and the front sits slightly proud of the front of the case (though they way it's styled it probablly looks better that way anyway) I'm not sure if this is startech's fault or antec's but it's still less than ideal.

I was slightly nervous about using these but I had an old tower case and an old server motherboard and wanted to create my own NAS so thought I'd give these a go. The worry was that the drives would be too cramped and run hot. Iniitally I ran 2 of these with four drives (2 per enclosure with a central gap) over a period of a month and monitored the temps. The drives ran consistently between 28 & 31 C. Then I loaded the final two and ran with all 6 ever since. Over two years these have run with the drives consistently between 28 & 31. Each drive has its own temp. and it's actually the drive, not the position as I tried swapping a couple round after a year to see if it made a difference. Under periods of really heavy load for an hour or more, one or two disks rise a degree then settle back. So enclosures and fans do what they are supposed to. Although slightly fiddly to fit 6 drives in two of these it wasn't hard.

Work as it should, i used this for mostley for sas drives you will need a sas card and a lead to get the correct speed and to work the sas drives, also can be used for sata drives as well or plugged direct to the motherboard for sata only but speed is limited to sata speeds. you can only use sas Drives with a sas card.

Works a treat and can change the cheaper HDDs as a plug and play for archiving movie making projects I am involved with

Delivered in 7 days to north of Sweden which is good. I like the the design. 3 Sata connections and 2 power connections, after connecting it worked without problem no drivers needed. There's 2 dip switches for fan high/low led lights on/off. The fan seems good quality in low mode I can hardly hear it over pcs fans(I got a new PC 2015/16) HDDs holds good temp., I've pc on 24/7 for months. However one hdd bay (middle one) has stopped working within 4 month of buy!!! I've tried different disk new/old big and small, SATA doesn't seem to detect.(already worn out) Checked connections in PC which is fine. I haven't overused or changing drives 10 times per day or so, I haven't even used all HDD-bays at all time. Have changed disk max 50 times over a period of 4 month... In order of product it's written "return window closed 16 Sep. 2016" (a month after purchase) Product must have longer warranty than a month! Haven't contacted seller yet will follow up.

Simply work or no. Had first one faulty, but seller kindly replaced item after going through troubleshooting steps. Apart from that, had small issue with fan. Its too massive and was difficult to install it in PC, but found workaround. Fans could be tiny. Overall I'm happy!

Well built and sturdy, the only downside is the extremely loud fan. For the price it is It should have been something more silent. I'll probably end u switching the fan later on myself.

No issues, fan on lowest setting is still audible but not loud imo, measured 30-35db with a phone app

Excelente solución para intercambiar discos duros entre un ordenador y un reproductor multimedia con bandeja extraíble. Me llegó sin problemas en apenas dos días laborables, pese a coincidir con las fiestas navideñas. La calidad de los materiales es muy buena, y el funcionamiento impecable. Windows 8.1 reconoció los tres discos nada más arrancar. Sin embargo, para poder expulsarlos en caliente, tuve que configurar la BIOS como AHCI, ya que por defecto venía como IDE. Tenía dudas sobre el ruido del ventilador, pero poniendo el selector de velocidad en "baja", apenas se distingue del ruido habitual del resto del ordenador. No lo he probado en "alta" porque solo inserto los discos a la hora de transferirles las películas y la música, estando el resto del tiempo en el reproductor o en un estuche Inatek que compré también por Amazon, por lo que no tengo problemas de sobrecalentamiento. Por ponerle un único pero, las bisagras de las puertas están aún un poco duras, pero me imagino que se irán aflojando con el tiempo. Aunque parece un poco caro, lo recomiendo 100% frente a otros productos de su clase.

Fa il suo mestiere ma gli sportellini sono di scarsa consistenza e fanno pensare che, per evitare che vi restino in mano o si deformino, sia meglio non sostituire i dischi troppo spesso. La ventola inoltre è rumorosa: anche impostandola al minimo si sente distintamente; al massimo (impostazione che con dischi che non scaldano troppo non credo serva) è anche fastidiosa. La valutazione dunque è forse generosa ma tiene conto che l'apparecchio può ad esempio essere tranquillamente utilizzato per un NAS da tenere in uno sgabuzzino. Certamente non ve lo suggerisco se intendete installarlo nel PC che tenete nello studio per cambiare il sistema operativo ogni volta che ne avete bisogno. il problema che di queste dimensioni e con questa capienza non c'è molto...
