Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as nine times more suspenseful than its predecessor, was The Cat O Nine Tails. When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute s scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis, Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco s young niece, may also be in the killer s sights...This second entry in the so-called Animal Trilogy found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O Nine Tails remains one of Argento s most suspenseful and underrated films.LIMITED EDITION CONTENTSBrand new 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negativeHigh Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentationsOriginal mono Italian and English soundtracks (lossless on the Blu-ray Disc)Newly translated English subtitles for the Italian soundtrackOptional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for the English soundtrackNew audio commentary by critics Alan Jones and Kim NewmanNew interviews with co-writer/director Dario Argento, co-writer Dardano Sacchetti, actress Cinzia De Carolis and production manager Angelo IaconoScript pages for the lost original ending, translated into English for the first timeOriginal Italian and international theatrical trailersReversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Candice TrippDouble-sided fold-out poster4 lobby card reproductionsLimited edition booklet illustrated by Matt Griffin, featuring an essay on the film by Dario Argento, and new writing by Barry Forshaw, Troy Howarth and Howard Hughes

The Cat O' Nine Tails Limited Edtion Blu-rayDVD
Presented in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio with DTS-HD Master Audio Mono English or Italian soundtracks, this is another fantastic 4k restoration from Arrow. The film can be watched in either English or Italian languages with corresponding opening and closing credits. There are English SDH subtitles for the English version of the film and newly translated English subtitles for the Itslian version. Both versions of the film contain brief inserts (signs on buildings, newspaper headlines etc) in Italian with automatic English on-screen translations. When watching the English version of the film on blu-ray this function unfortunatly duplicates the title of the film, the DVD however does not have this problem. The discs, poster and booklet are housed in a very sturdy hardboard slipbox. The Blu-ray is region B, the DVD region 2.

Weaker D Argento movie
I've seen the other two of the three that are known as the animal trilogy and have to say they are better. This film is definitely worth a watch if you're a fan like me of Argento's works, but it is a bit too long and the shock/horror elements in other films aren't really in evidence in this one. It's a shame because Jame Franciscus and Karl Malden are great to watch but the story is a bit leaden in developement. Still worth watching for the early seventies vibes though.

A Classic Argento 1970s Murder Mystery
For the age of this film, picture and sound quality of both pretty good; although it’s not been remastered/restored (as far as I could tell). A simple story line, and don’t expect lashings of gore. It’s the second in Argento’s so called “animal trilogy” films (the others being The Bird With The Crystal Plumage and Four Flies On Grey Velvet). The soundtrack is quite good, by another Italian maestro. Not one of Argento’s best films, but certainly better than some. As in many of his films, various clues to the mystery are simply visual; rather to be found in logical deduction alone.
