Outta Sight/Outta Mind probably won't appeal much to people who felt that the Datsuns' first album was unoriginal; but those who liked the New Zealand quartet's straightforward, no-thrills rock & roll will be overjoyed by this release. With legendary Led Zeppelin bass-man John Paul Jones at the production helm, the Datsuns have created a denim-clad, riff-heavy beast of a rock album. Once again, they combine the brainless punk of the Ramones with the party ready guitars of vintage AC/DC; the result is a collection of 12 songs that are proud to be dumb, from the full-on assault of album opener "Blacken My Thumb" to the dirty blues of "Messin' Around" to the plodding, stoner rock of "Hong Kong Fury". From start to finish, Outta Sight/Outta Mind is music that's fuelled by beer and months out on the road--the essence of pure rock & roll. Yes, it's unoriginal. Yes, it's dumb. But the Datsuns know that the power of rock & roll heals all such things. --Robert Burrow
