A great first season
'The Flash' is the first spinoff from the very entertaining 'Arrow' and, although the tone is somewhat lighter than that of its parent series, 'The Flash' is just as good if not slightly better. The series runs concurrently with the third season of 'Arrow' and there are quite a few crossovers between the two series so there are a number of spoilers for those not up to date with its parent series. 'The Flash' itself is a very entertaining show that, despite being somewhat episodic for the most part, has various things that tie each episode together and build to a very good final few episodes.Highlights of the series for me include the episodes that deal the series story arc and the Reverse-Flash (such as 'The Man in the Yellow Suit' and 'The Trap'), as well as those that involve my favourite character from the series Captain Cold ('Going Rogue', 'Revenge of the Rogues', 'Rogue Time' and 'Rogue Air'). As for the episodes I like least; in some of the early episodes (such as 'Things you can’t Outrun' and 'Plastique'), the show is still finding its feet and aren’t nearly as good as some of the later episodes. The acting of the people in the series is mostly very good with all the main cast seeming to thoroughly enjoy the roles that they play. Grant Gustin is very good as Barry Allen/The Flash with Tom Cavanagh, Jesse L. Martin and Carlos Valdes also being particularly good as Dr Wells, Joe West and Cisco Remon respectively. As for the villains, Wentworth Miller who plays Leonard Snart/Captain Cold is by far my favourite giving a beautifully hammy performance. A special mention must go to Mark Hamill as well who reprises his role as James Jesse/The Trickster from the 1990 Flash TV show in the hilarious episode 'Tricksters'.The special effects used in the series are generally very good throughout, although it does use the old trick of setting CGI heavy scenes in the dark in an attempt to hide any problems.Special features for the five disc DVD set include deleted scenes, commentaries, outtakes and four featurettes about various aspects of the show (such as behind the scenes on the episode 'Tricksters' and one on the VFX used in the show).'The Flash' is a very entraining show once it gets going and I would probably rate it slightly better than either season one or two of 'Arrow' at a low five stars and I will be very much looking forward to the second series.

FOR FANS OF THE GENRE, SO MUCH TO APPEAL
Welcome here Barry Allen, transformed by an accelerated particle malfunction into the fastest man on earth. Unlike so many muscular superheroes, he is young, slight of build and vulnerable. Haunting him are memories of his mother's murder fifteen years ago, his father wrongly charged and in prison ever since. (Can Barry be the only superhero who cries? No wonder many viewers will warm to him.)Despite such grim family matters, here is a series deliberately light in tone. Grant Gustin as Barry enormously appeals. (Bonuses include his screen tests, creators quickly realizing he was exactly right.) Initially at any rate, the emphasis is on fun - Barry thrilled with his new powers, he just a blur when out and about secretly doing good. Gradually the tone becomes darker. Forced to face up to increasing responsibilities, he is occasionally too impulsive and makes serious mistakes. (Awesome are his successes though.)As ever in such fare, villains are larger than life - of course mainly destined to escape so they can create mayhem in future episodes. Barry's lab team mates are both ultra-intelligent but amusing, especially Cisco (who delights in giving nicknames to villains who come their way). What, though, of their boss Dr. Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) - goodie or baddie? Time will tell. Movingly depicted is the relationship between Barry and foster dad Joe (Jesse L. Martin) - he a real strength after Barry's double family tragedy.23 episodes. Interesting bonuses - including the same 2014 Comic-Con session that appears in the GOTHAM 1 box set. Superheroes have converged to answer questions, amongst them Arrow and Constantine. (By the way, Arrow and Felicity make guest appearances in this season - which will doubly please fans.)Sit back, relax and enjoy. Savour the absurdities (as when Barry quells a towering inferno blaze by whirring his arms). Most special effects, though, are great - Firestorm especially. Relish too some of the writing - as when The Trickster (Mark Hamill) declares of his next project, "It will be my masterpiece, my 'Breaking Bad' Season 5."Yes, a most happy addition to the genre.

-) I like that there is interaction between the characters of different ...
I find the extended DC Universe on TV (The Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) more enjoyable than their Batman and Superman film franchises. From the movie reviews, I guess I might not be alone :-)I like that there is interaction between the characters of different TV series, such as The Arrow and his crew guest starring on episodes of The Flash, or The Flash accidentally visiting the parallel Earth in which Supergirl exists. Who's faster? I won't tell...I watched most of the episodes of seasons 1 & 2 of The Flash on TV, but missed a few, so I decided to get the Blu-rays and binge watch the entire series. It's great.I find it a bit perplexing that Grant Gustin, who plays the The Flash in the TV series hasn't appeared in the DC films, but who knows, maybe there are contractual or scheduling issues. Batman has been rebooted so many times, with so many different actors, that I suppose the movie production exists in its own parallel universe, but DC could benefit from loosely tying the TV series and movies together, the way that Marvel does. There is one thing that I can find fault with, and it's not the story-line or the Blu-ray packaging -- it's the illogical pricing. At the time of writing, the Blu-ray box set The Flash Seasons 1 & 2 is about 10% cheaper than the Blu-ray for just Season 2. If you already have the Blu-ray for Season 1, what are you supposed to do? Pay *more* for Season 2? Or buy the cheaper Seasons 1 & 2 and throw Season 1 in the trash? Not very environmentally friendly, and completely illogical.
