This is arguably the most important text of Sri Ramana's teachings and it is one of the few texts which were composed by Sri Ramana himself. His foremost disciple Sri Muruganar asked him about the nature of reality and in 1928 Sri Ramana composed these 4o verses with two additional introductory verses.The original text was composed in Tamil, the language Sri Ramana usually used to communicate with and the translation is by not only one of the best translators of Tamil to English but also by one who has the most refined understanding of Sri Ramana's teachings and that is Michael James who has studied Sri Ramana for over 40 years.Michael James has written a lovely and lucid introduction which is immensely helpful not only in approaching this text but also in understanding Sri Ramana's teaching itself.From the introduction:”[...] In order to have true and deep love for him [Sri Ramana], we need to trust him, and our trust in him and consequent love for him are born out of clarity of mind and heart, which naturally arises from within to the extent that our mind is purified, meaning cleansed of its impurities, namely its likes and dislikes, attachments, hopes, fears, and so on. In my opinion, all the spiritual seekers have to read this book in their lifetime. We could understand how we live a dream life and take all the external things so seriously. We are so fortunate to understand the teaching from the Almighty God himself. Translation and Explanation of Michael James's is extraordinary.
