'Witchcraft' is a record that conjures up the macabre essence of vintage Pentagram, and, of course Black Sabbath whilst incorporating influences as wide apart as Jethro Tullesque folky prog & the bludgeon riffing style of early 70s Bang. 11 tracks. Rise Above. 2004.

Doomier than a hung over Monday morning
Witchcraft play music that should make you feel like bopping around, and yet, paradoxically, also make you want to sit in a dark room and brood on lifes woes for a few weeks. The bass lines on this album are superb. Really catchy and vibrant, and of course, "Geezer" Butler inspired.I'm only 28, so I don't remember the intial virus that was the Sabbath infection on a young and bored youth generation. Listening to this "modern" sludge rock, with its high, heart felt vocals, painfully slow riffs, crushing bass lines and funky solos, I can now appreciate as near as damn it what it was like to buy Sabbath's debut in 1970.Ok, so the lyrics are not about keyhole brain surgery, or Astro-physics, but this is Doom Rock !!!! Its about angst and suffering, about the simple woes and tribulations of life. And yet the tunes will have you grinning like a cheshire cat coz they are that infectiously good.It does sound like it was recorded in garage to an extent (something the sleeve notes are proud to announce) but it doesn't detract from the overall experience one bit.A certain mag described their music as "late 60's Stones, meets early 70's Sabbath"... and its a pretty good description, although its distinctly more Sabbath !!!4 stars purely coz the over all musical idea was already there since 1970. Otherwise 5.Track 7, no Angel or Demon, is a particular belter, by the way.

70s-style heavy rock for the new millenium
This is an album for people who like 70s-style heavy rock, and wish there was more of it. Well, now there is, thanks to Witchcraft. All the tunes are melodic and heavy at the same time, and structured enough to maintain interest. You can hear influences from Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Cream and others. The vocals are very expressive. If you like those bands you will play this album over and over again. They really capture that 70s sound.
