The UPM-DT523 is designed to reduce the amount of time lights are used after dark. For example, even if your lights are programmed to switch on at 6pm but if the sun does not set until 7pm, the timer will not go on until 7pm. If you prefer the lights are activated at 6pm regardless of lighting, you can program your timer so that they do come on. Perfect for Christmas lights on the tree as well as outside.

Works well, but needs battery backup for time & setting
I replaced the mechanical timer on my Malibu driveway and shrub lights with this controller which resulted in energy savings as my lights now come on much later and I don't the mechanical timer running. This unit allows the lights to come on at dusk and I can set the off time.A couple of improvements are needed:1. Battery backup of the time/schedule in case the power goes out. It seems every controller has battery backup but this one.2. Larger display items for ON, OFF, CLOCK. There should be no need for reading glasses.3. Setting Instructions are on the back of the unit.If the unit had battery backup, I would have immediately ordered a second unit. Now I am looking for alternatives.
