Good upgrade for the Sony Vaio VGN BX41XN
This was bought as a plug-in replacement for the 120GB hard disk that came with the laptop. It's very easy to replace: 2 screws on a cover underneath opposite the CDROM bay, which allows you to pull the plastic hard drive housing out, and another 2 screws on the removed housing to free the hard disk. There are no cables or jumpers to worry about. The hard drive housing plugs in and out like a module on the Vaio BX, with the 2 retaining screws on the base to secure it when plugged in.To copy the old hard disk to the new one, I used a 500GB USB 'my passport' hard drive as an intermediary.1 ) Boot up the laptop using a bootable CD of 'Puppy Linux' or other live CD distribution.2 ) Use the 'dd' command* to make a byte-for-byte copy of the internal hard disk to the external one.3 ) Swap hard disks, and boot up again using the live CD4 ) Use the 'dd' command to copy the USB drive to the new internal one.That left me with a booting 120GB Windows drive 'C' and a 500GB empty partition to format as a 'D' drive (though I could have resized the 120GB using the live Linux app GParted if I'd wanted)*I tried using Norton Ghost V15 to do the job first, but it was unsuccessful as well as *very* slow. Linux 'dd' was fast and accurate.The new drive is as quick as the old one, and was a worthwhile purchase for sure.

Easy peasy installation
My laptop died a couple of years ago and thought I'd try and repair it before giving up and buying another. I've never had any lessons in computer maintenance so feel quite chuffed to have solved all the problems with a new hard drive. This one was double the size of my old one so now it feels like I have a brand new laptop for the price of this hard drive. Woohoo! It's easy peasy to unscrew the old one and put the new one in, but you'll need the Operating System CD.
