It took me months to actually buy this at the listed price of around $15. In the interim, I'd occasionally see it in stock, but if I so much as thought twice about hitting the go button it would disappear from my cart and reappear at two or three times the price. It's funny to me because this isn't even a unique character or a preset, and it restocked at the official price fairly often so I can't imagine it's especially rare. It took a while, but I got my dripped out octoling, and if I squint I can pretend it's using my actual main instead of its thiccer but inferior cousin. Unfortunately, the kind of scalping behavior that sees it listed at prices of $40 or more introduce an artificial scarcity that both dissuades Nintendo from committing to doing anything interesting with Amiibo and keeps them out of the hands of people who want them but aren't willing to bite the bullet.
