Very Sharp, Cuts Effortlessly, But Blade Doesn't Lock Out
The Steelite Auto-Retractable Box Cutter is nice looking and the blade is extremely sharp, as would be expected from a ceramic blade. It slices through packaging tape as if it is not even there. If use is confined to such applications, I expect it will retain an edge for a very long time. If used to cut cardboard clearly it will wear faster, but still should prove quite durable. Ceramic blades are very hard. But they are totally inflexible. They are strong, but, if exposed to prying action with sufficient resistance they will shatter (break). So, care must be taken not to expose the blade to such a mechanical shear. I think that would be hard to break as it normally will protrude only a short distance from the handle. So, there won't be much leverage.I am quite experienced with the typical use of a box cutter. This particular device has some design issues which, in my opinion, will significantly limit its usability. In short, the blade cannot be locked out. It is pushed out using the thumb and retracts immediately as soon as pressure is released. The spring tension is quite strong. So, significant force is required to press and hold the blade out. Now, I know this is done for safety. But this is a razor box cutter. So, it is inherently not a toy and can be dangerous if used carelessly. There are myriad reasons why this feature is a problem. First, someone without sufficient thumb strength, be it due to an injury, handicap, or just frailty cannot use this device. Second, there are many reasons why you need to set a limited cut depth not to damage product, etc. when cutting. And third, you cannot hold the blade out when cutting at any odd angle, like cutting tape on the left-hand side of a box with your right hand. In this case, you are cutting away from your body but with your hand rotated. Your thumb doesn't work that way. In my opinion not being able to lock the blade out and also not being able to set the cut depth are non-starters if this is intended for use in any serious packaging environment.Another minor, but annoying issue is there is no in handle blade storage. The unit comes with an extra blade which is very good. But, where to keep it? It can easily be lost, and I will surly loose it in our warehouse if the installed blade lasts a long time, as I think it will. Plus, it is extremely sharp. So, much care must be taken to secure it, so it inadvertently accidentally doesn't expose someone to injury.I think these blades will fit a standard box cutter. If so, all of the issues mentioned as to the device can be easily avoided and this becomes a good value for the blades alone.I love the durability and silky-smooth cutting action. But there are serious drawbacks with the packaging and usability. I like the overall concept and will only deduct one star for ergonomic shortcomings.

Stylish and sleek utility knife that I would not be afraid to put in my pocket
I really wanted to love this knife, but I do like it. It is stylish and feels good in the hand. Even though it is plastic, it feels solid. Ceramic blades are new to me, but this cuts open boxes with ease. Time will tell how durable the blade is and ceramic blades are pricy. They do promise to last much longer than metal. All in all the knife is pretty good. The thing that dropped a star for me is that in order to cut with it, you have to put energy to keeps the blade open by pressing forward against the spring that keeps it closed. I guess the plus side of that is that I don’t worry about it accidentally opening.

Sharp and works well.
This is a nice box cutter. The ceramic blade is very sharp. It is easy to change out the blades, with a button that releases the end of the holder and it opens up so you can simply remove the old blade and put in a new one. I didn’t know what auto-retractable meant when I ordered this. Though I like the knife, I would rather have some sort of button that holds it open, as is you have to hold on to the slider to keep it open.

hard to hold open
I really liked the idea of this because it is so much more convenient for opening boxes than a box cutter that you have to keep opening and closing (at least if you are being safe) but although it cuts well it is uncomfortable to hold open. I think it is a combination of having a stiff spring and that the slider is pretty flat so there isn't much of anything to hold your thumb against to push it open. You have to grip it pretty hard or it will want to slide closed, if you don't have good hand strength this won't work well for you. I like the ceramic blades though and am hoping that the spring will relax with use, making it easier to hold open.

It doesn’t look like it but it’s extremely sharp and lightweight in the hand
The Steelite Auto-Retractable Box Cutter Ceramic Utility Knife comes with a blade installed although I didn’t know that and when I opened up the knife, the blade fell out so I had to reinstall it with the dull blade pointed outward. There’s an extra blade in the packaging and I had to use strong scissors to open the package. I got this to replace my generic yellow box cutter that I’ve had for over a decade and boy is it sharp!
