Q: how many bags would i need for a 20'x40' dog pen?

I don't know what manufacturer's specifications call for. I used half a bag to cover the floor of an 8'x2' dog house. I would think if you bought six you would likely have a bit left over, which is not a bad position to be in.

Q: How big are these flakes of pine? Please could someone provide a picture or a measurement in inches?

The flakes are various sizes. In a handful, the largest shaving is about 2 inches.

Q: Is this product pine shavings only or a mix with other wood shavings including pine flakes for scent?

Haven't opened it yet but I believe its only pine shavings.
