Somebody must have priced these wrong. This is a top-quality leather and magnetic set. Load up on these. The perfect gift for bright 7-year-olds and up.

Nice set but the light/dark squares are reversed from where they should be to agree with the number/lettering along the sides. Don't plan on using the number/lettering on the sides so won't matter to me.

We are missing a king. What’s the point if you can’t get the right chess pieces?

We took a chance on this set with it having no reviews yet. We had been looking for particulars - smaller size, foldable, magnetic. We have been so happily surprised and impressed with this set!! It does everything looking for! I will be buying more for gifts!

The A-H squares must begin dark- and end light-colored (i.e. The bottom right corner must be light).Playing from the light piece perspective the king must be on its opposite (dark) colored square E1; however, in following the opposite colored square rule for the King's placement puts him on D1 where the queen belongs.One can ignore the 1-8 and A-H markings of the ranks and files, respectively and simply turn the board 90 degrees to achieve proper light and dark square alignment for correct play. Unfortunately, for those who are trying to learn the square placements of pieces as they move, this will be at best a distraction and at worst a detriment to their play.The quality for what you paid for is otherwise good, so a 1-star bonus for that to save it from a 1-star rating.

It was a bit pricey, but I think worth the cost. The leather feels nice to the touch and the pieces glide over the surface with little effort. The bags holding the pieces and checkers are a very nice touch and keep the pieces from falling all over the place when opening the board, while at the same time not having to dig the pieces out of cavities that are too snug. I've lost several pieces over the years on other sets that had that storage option.The magnets hold well enough to prevent the pieces from moving much. One downside with the checkers is that sometimes the magnets were put in upside-down, so when you "crown" a checker the top one is repelled. It forces going into the bag holding the captured checkers to find another one of the appropriate color to use as the "crown". Fortunately not too many are affected by this, and the chance of someone having six or more kings at the same time is small.I'd recommend this to anyone wanting a travelling set of chess and checkers that can be played virtually anywhere. However, I wouldn't recommend taking it into water, though, since the board and pieces are mostly wood.
