What's unique about this book is its insight into the cultural role of the sari and sari-wearing in modern India. The information about the history, production, and types of saris is interspersed with the experiences of "Mira", a woman who adopts the sari as daily wear after marrying into a more conservative family. Her observations reveal complex -- and sometimes contradictory -- cultural forces at play in the wearing of this traditional garment.The book is heavily illustrated with photographs, but is not an art-book style collection of pretty fabric pictures. There is a lot of information here, in a readable and accessible style, but the book is also not an encyclopedia or dictionary of sari types or history.It is not a stand-alone guide to the sari, but if you are interested in the history, regional styles, and cultural role of these beautiful fabrics, it is a great addition to your collection.

The book itself is a large coffee table size with beautiful photographs depicting the Sari (the Indian Women's dress). As for the content, I think the authors did a great job bringing to life the sari (approximately six yards of material) it's meaning tradionally, socially, and economically. They explain through research and stories from woman of all backgrounds the how and why of choosing the fabric, color and how to wear the sari for different occasions and what it means to the them.I bought this book for a friend interested in the Indian Culture and the Sari. I gave it five stars because my friend loved the content of the book and I was thrilled with the gift quality of the hardcover edition.*As a sidenote, I don't think the softcover edition would have the same impact as the hardcover edition.

I found this book very interesting, I didnt realize how complicated a sari is for the Indian woman. I had this on my list for well over a year trying to decide if I wanted it or not. Im glad I decided to buy it.

Some surprising misinformation in this volume (e.g., author stated hijras are hermaphrodites. Hello???!!! Hijras are not hermaphrodites!) but its greatest letdown is the black and white photography that is often dull and muddled. Saris are amazingly beautiful garments with fantastic textiles and I was expecting beautiful color illustrations...nope. I had high hopes for this book but was disappointed.

This book was advertised as new; it is not new, but clearly used. And the softcover book was not noted as having black and white photos rather than color. The book is not what I expected and I am disappointed in the seller.

I love the text - but the pictures in black and white are so disappointing that I have been thinking about buying the hardcover version!

Don't buy this book if you are expecting it to have the full-color photos that are in the original hard bound edition!! This volume uses poor black and white renditions of the color images used in the original.

This is a fabulous book. I spent 6 months in India. I because very aware of the social implications of wearing a sari. This book is the most thorough analysis of this social phenomenom. It was so interesting I could barely put it down.

Lovely book. Very little to say about the sari fabric, but fascinating social history and anecdotes. Although it's not a new book, it's a must for anyone interested in these fabulous garments.

The book arrived within a short space of time, so delivery was quick and the condition of the book was great for a second hand book. The book itself is fantastic! A brilliant insight into the minds of Indian women and how they dress! Great for any textiles/fashion student especially but an enjoyable, easy-going read all round!

Excellent table top book with nice pictures and got for less price too!
