A Dog Abroad: One Man and his Dog Journey into the Heart of Europe

Opinionated, irritating but also informative and entertaining travelogue.
This is an interesting book about a journey taken at an interesting time. The dog is mainly irrelevant, sometimes she attracts attention from the locals and she joins him on walks, meh as they say. But the route taken around Northern Europe is similar to one I would like to take and Fogle is a good writer. His observations about how several countries, in trying to move forward from Soviet occupation, have ignored the contribution of the large Jewish populations which were annihilated in WW2 are very valid. Open air museums, for example, were missing references to the rich Jewish life of the regions featured. I hope this situation has since improved. I find Mr Fogle somewhat irritating as a guide, however, verging on the prejudiced. Finns don't respond to his cheery greetings so he dismisses the nation as a gloomy lot. Several times he drools at the sight of an attractive young woman, this from a guy in his late middle-age with a wife waiting at home for him! Like many travellers, he thinks he understands a place after a chat or a drink with a local. At least, in being so opinionated, Fogle makes this a less bland read than it could otherwise have been.

Good All Round Read
This book could be filed under so many different headings! A good travel book, a dog story, ancient and modern history - even cookery! I enjoyed Bruce Fogle's previous travel book with Macy in America, and it inspired us to visit Santa Fe. I don't know that we will follow his footsteps again, but I found the book to be fascinating and thought provoking. In years to come this book may be considered a valuable comment on the various countries in rapidly changing times. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

I loved this book
If you are a dog lover and love travelling you will love this book. I have a golden retriever myself and have several of Bruce Fogles more serious books but this one was fantastic. This book is more like a journal of a man who travels Europe with his dog. The unexpected part for me was finding out so much about parts of Europe I had never thought of before or had any inclination of visiting. I found out that they build platforms for storks to nest on in some european countries. It is a cross between a travel book (a la Bill Bryson) and a book about dogs (Marley and me). A great read.
