I can't say without knowing the thickness of the fabric you are working on. The clips do not open very wide and break if force to open larger. Great for a couple of widths of cotton fabric.

Can these Hold socks together in washing machine?

I have no idea. I use them to secure fabric on a bolt. They are just like the clips on folded shirts that you buy. Try them. You might like them.
