This Townsend Library classic has been carefully edited to be more accessible to today's students. It includes a background note about the book, an author's biography, and a lively afterword. Acclaimed by educators nationwide, the Townsend Library is helping millions of young adults discover the pleasure and power of reading. Review: Wonderfully written stories of an amazing collie. - Recalled reading this as a young person and loving the dog and book. So I recently re-read it after about 60 years and discovered a real treasure. Albert P. Terhune was an excellent writer and observer of life. Adventure, empathy, understanding, challenges....so many fine qualities come through. Grandparents and young people and all in between would enjoy and appreciated this book, and many others he wrote. Review: A great, timeless book - I loved this book as a child, and itโs been a pleasure to revisit the wonderful world of The Place. I enjoyed Terhuneโs vivid descriptions and still dream of owning a home with a wide veranda, sweeping lawns, and library with a roaring fireplace. Terhune writes about character, grace, justice, and sacrifice as played out in the life of Lad.

My granddaughter loved this story!
This story was a favorite of mine as a child, so I ordered it for my 10 year old granddaughter. She took it to camp with her and loved it!

Lad - a thoroughbred in heart and soul!
I've loved Lad: A Dog since childhood. I will always love it. I even saw Lad's gravestone in Pompton Lakes - "Lad, A thoroughbred in heart and soul 1918"

Great Story of a Great Dog - but descriptive.
Lad is a working dog who takes his job very seriously...guarding the farm, it's house, his people and the rest of the working pack. He is a warrior and an alpha dog worthy of high respect. Lad has a very interesting life with many and varied stories! His "Master" and "Mistress" loved, respected and trusted him. They fought for his character when it was under attack. What I really love about this book is that Lad and his adventures is patterned after a real Collie. I would have LOVED to have had Lad as my own. However, this book is written in a different time when pets were not kept as family members. Dog fights among pack members, defending his home against intruders etc. happen, and it is more descriptive than I would like. It is not a book for young children who want a warm and fuzzy story. Lad a Dog is a realistic adventure of a farm dog who outlives the 9 lives of any cat!

Passing on the Love
This book was a present for my grand daughter. She loves dogs and loves to hear my stories as a child. I read all o Albert Payson Terhune's Lad books and many others. I wanted to share that love with my granddaughter.
