We haven't changed the water but just topped up as it evaporated. As long as you don't overfeed the water seems to stay clear and doesn't smell. We still have ours six months later. They are living creatures, so shouldn't be "disposed" of but CARED for.

Don't feed them for a few days until it clears.

Q: How soon do you have to start them once you have received them. Have just got mine and wanted to give to my dsughter for her birthday in March?

I think that will be fine as they are dormant when dry.
