Marvel comics don't get better than this
The Ultimates brings The Avengers (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor) to the Ultimate Marvel universe and the result is one of the best titles Marvel have ever published in my opinion. This book reboots the Avengers and starts right from the beginning, so no knowledge of the original Marvel universe is needed. What Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch have achieved here is really quite awesome, reading like a big-budget Hollywood movie. The characters and plot are grounded in real world settings and much more believable than the original Avengers. Yes, its a story about super heroes who dress up in crazy costumes but none the less it has a realistic, gritty quality which is quite amazing considering the subject. Millar has managed to give the characters real depth and Hitch's artwork has a photo-realistic quality rarely seen in comics.Whether you are already a fan of Marvel or you're someone looking to try comics for the first time then you really can't do much better than this.Brilliant.

Ultimate
Having read up on the Ultimates: Ultimate Collection before buying, I was concerned that it would follow the same course as the ultimate avengers one and two animated films. However, much to my satisfaction, the animated films are only loosely based on this book and so the storyline felt fresh and captivating.Although there is not as much action as would be expected from a book of this title, the story more then makes up for it making the whole experience well worth the read. There are even a few cheesy jokes. If you are into marvel in general and enjoy the avengers characters then this book is well worth it. If you are into good artwork and story telling then again this book is worth the price.

Great!
What actually makes this Avengers' series interesting is the mere manifestation of the avengers as superheroes with real everyday life problems. The storyline is well written and artwork is amazing. Recommended!

Excellent for comic newcomers
I've used this book to succesfully introduce a half dozen people to comic books, so that's the context I'll recommend it in. This story takes the flagship characters of Marvel's biggest superteam, the Avengers, and introduces new, modern versions of them. This means that you don't need to know any back story or comic trivia to get the most out of this book. It also doesn't hurt that Bryan Hitch's art style tends to be clear and dynamic, which makes action sequences easy to follow. It reads quite like the type of Hollywood blockbuster that the Avengers will soon appear in. If you arrived on this page AFTER seeing that movie, then the characters might be a little different with the ones you saw on-screen. However, don't let that put you off, as this book (and it's sequel) were a major influence on the recent Marvel movies. And, for the handful of existing comic fans that haven't read this, you absolutely should too.

good but not a 5 star
nobody take me wrong, only a matter of opinion.i'm a big fan of the avengers, cap in particular.i think this is a great novel for beginners.say people that it's not familiar with classic comics..people that saw the movies and now wants to discover the marvel univers.but if u pick up a 1980/1990/2000 avengers, xmen,or whatever, batman, superman, green lantern,or any pre/movies era graphic novel,u will note right away many differences.the rapidity with which events evolve, the lack of descriptive bubble and bubbles of thought from any of the caracter,(really, nobody think in this comic??!!nobody has a thought in they head?not even cap or fury?)everything it's direct dialog, the plot it's fast and very simple.a lot of splash pages again with very very limited dialogs, which makes the reading even faster,(376 pages?u can swallow them in less then 2 hours.)let's say,it looks more like a story board of a possible new avengers movie, where the director say"...ok the camera will be here and this what happend, and this is what the cameraman has to catch..."then again, iron man has a drink everytime he does'n have the suit on,(u don't see this since early 90's i think, not the best example for a superhero)giant men a super violent freak(that did not change, but they could have done something about it),bruce banner/hulk treated like a wild beast, used for battle and then thrown in some s.h.i.e.l.d. security cell stuffed with tranquilizers(hulk always had a bit of banner brain working, even in the worst of the moment(see planet hulk or w.w.hulk)here he is just plain ignorant)fury it's a copy of samuel l.jackson(i love it in the movie, but i just can't forget how it always looked like in g.novels)..the two that save themself are cap and thor.so at the end i still think it's a great book, the story it's good, art is really good as well, and if u are a new reader, this works perfectly, but if u have ever read a 1997/98 avengers assemble from kurt busiek,or even a more recent one like captain america from ed brubaker,or u are old school comic fun u'll probably agree with my comments.as i said at the beginner it's only a opinion, but i would like to know if anyone of the old school readers has had the same impression.buy it if u like to start, but once u know them,go back on the old one's...u'll be surprised..

Love this book
Mr. Millar does an excellent job telling this story. It is The Avengers with a twist. Different Avengers, but the same characters. Excellent job with reconning each origin story, Tony Stark is every bit the genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist. Steve Rogers is a man out of time. Thor would certainly look like a mental patient to those who met him.Great artwork as well. Marvel does not disappoint.
