great clear guide to the ins and outs of the D3100
Bought this for kindle so that I could have a nice reference available on my iPhone (via the iPhone kindle app) when I'm out and about. The book doesn't assume anything, but also isn't annoying slow for someone who already knows the basics.Walks you through every setting and mode very clearly on the D3100 and even recommends accessories and lenses (by the way, the 35mm prime f1.8 Nikkor lens is a MUST for everyone). It'll even teach you a lot about the basics of photography as well. I consider myself intermediate and there where a few concepts that I kind of knew that this more fully fleshed out for me.You bought your D3100 to take awesome pictures and get more than your point and shoot camera could provide. This book will help you actually do that, unlike 90% of D3100 owners who use it as a really bulky, really expensive point and shoot. The D3100 is really an amazing camera for the price, buy this and realize what a great camera it is.

Great Book for the Beginning D-SLR Photographer
I purchased this book a few days after receiving the Nikon D3100 Kit. Being a beginner, I was wondering if this guide would be a little too advanced for a newbie like me. I was able to purchase it for $13, so I figured it wouldn't be a waste.First, the book starts out with a small, "Quick Tour" of the D3100. This was very helpful to someone new to the camera, but also helpful to someone who has never used a D-SLR. After a few pages, the first chapter delves more deeply into the camera, explaining functionality in much more detail.More reading provides information on basic composition, lighting, and equipment. I found these chapters to be most helpful, having never used anything other than a point-and-shoot digital camera. I have since referenced these chapters several times while taking some practice shots. Although I am not currently interested in shooting video, there's a quick chapter on doing it with the D3100, for those who are interested. The most applicable chapter, for my competency level, was one that deals with shooting in many different types of real-world situations. In great detail, the book covers shooting landscapes, sporting events, portraits, in low light, etc.. I have also referenced these while practicing. All in all, I would definitely recommend this book for the pure beginner. It's very well written and easy to breeze through. The book is also not overly technical, but provides more detail in all of the right places.

Greatly shortens the learning curve
This book was helpful. Definitely a step up from the abbreviated print manual included with the D3100. The cd has a more in depth manual, but still awkward to read. This book give a good tour of the buttons and menus, along with some opinions and recommendations. There is a good amount of general photography fluff that may be useful and inspiring to new shooters, but not essential to learning your new d3100. I suggest reading this book with camera in hand and taking a few hours or more to really learn your camera inside and out. I found it helpful to reset my shooting menus often in the beginning just to force myself to get familiar with quickly finding my desired settings.

Well laid out and written book
A good solid ... basic guide book for the D3100 ... not a comprehensive detailed manual ... but just what one needs to understand what you are getting with your camera. Especially helpful for reference back to those little used functions you might need to remind yourself about on the camera.I like the format and the easy of use. I think it is well put together and helpful for a new owner of the particular camera. It is what it says it is ... a field guide. Small enough to tote with you on a trip. A bit to large to carry in the field ... but serves it's purpose well.

More than just a manual
I bought this book shortly after purchasing my Nikon d3100 in hopes of learning how to use it better. It greatly exceeded my expectations. Not only does it explain every button and function of my camera and when/why to use them. It also delves into the basics of photography. I especially liked the chapter about lenses. It's nice to read a book about photography and then have the author say 'with your camera, you'll need to use this..." It's like it was written just for me! Very nice book for a beginner like myself.

Fails to achieve its stated aims
The book tells you all about this camera's capabilities but stops short at how to access them all. So far I have achieved satisfying results with this camera only by using the automatic exposure settings and scene modes, which are so obvious as not to need any explanation. All attempts at using the manual modes have been disappointing. Here is where I hoped this book would help out, but it has not. It talks about how the camera can do this and that. Fine, but how? You get an illustrated overview of the camera's controls near the front of the book (not much improvement on the official manual), after which there are few illustrations (apart from sample images) to show you what controls or menus you need to access to achieve the aspirations mentioned in the text. Quite a large portion of the book is devoted to general techniques that would be applicable whatever camera you were using. Some might see this as a point in the book's favour. I would look elsewhere for general advice. Now I must look elsewhere for specific guidance on making the most of the Nikon D3100 since I have not found much here.

Got me going
I had a look at the camera then a look at the included paperwork and then at Amazon. The Nikon D3100 is an entry level DSLR camera and I am an entry level user with a quite good knowledge of taking photographs with good small digital cameras. I scrolled through the lists of books and the Field Guide seemed the one that I came back to. I checked the reviews and went ahead and completed my purchase. Then I sat back and twiddled my thumbs as the book was found on a shelf somewhere in the US of A and dispatched to me. I carried on playing with the settings on my camera and although the camera didn't object it got its own back when I reviewed the results on my computer. Then the Field Guide plopped onto the doormat. (For those who have never had the joy of receiving their post through a hole in the door rather than in a box on a pole in the garden you are missing out on the sound of your mail hitting the door mat as well as not having to take a walk to pick it up). From page one I started to learn quickly and easily as the Field Guide to the Nikon DSLR D3100 just walked me through the ways to get the best out of my camera. It was like having a friend helping me out with more than just tips but without the expletives. If you have upgraded to the D3100 as your first DSLR then the book should be you next purchase because they go together like whatever euphemism you want to use.

Excellent companion for the camera
I was looking for a book that would help me more than the official camera manual. I needed something that did not just tell me what the controls were, but how and when they would best be used.this book fulfils this function very well. I have been working my way through it, and although some things still too technical for me, it has definitely increased my knowledge as to what the camera can do.For the price I would recommend this as a welcome addition to the camera's armoury.

Good book - not great on B&W kindle though!
The content of this book is very clear and easy to understand. Lots of great information for both photographers and owners of Nikon's D3100.On the downside, many of the benefits of this book are lost in kindle format. Image comparisons and the authors won pictures do not view well in a non-fire kindle. If you want a good model-specific book for your D3100 camera then this is a good choice BUT don't buy it on for your B&W kindle - buy the print version and then you'll get the full benefit of this book.
