Powerful Metal and nylon gears shreds itself in a short time making it a box.
We used this about 9 times not for long periods and it was never over fed.We always found the emptying process messy but it did shred so the vacuum did its job.One day it just stopped shredding, we stripped it down and to our surprise found it has a metal spiral drive gear turning a nylon gear. The result was that the nylon gear was flat, thus meaning it wont shred because it can't turn. We wrote to Rexel explaining the situation and they said"Thank you for your enquiry.Rexels style range of small shredders has an excellent reliable record and product failures are low.The nature of the worn gear is suggesting this is normal wear and tear on the product."So if you want a shredder that shreds itself very quickly making it just a box, and the customer service replies quickly but is ambivalent then this is the product for you. However if you are looking for a reliable shredder I would look else where.

I used it a couple of times and it was fine, before I started to shred some bank statements ...
I rate this shredder as 3 star for the product and 0 star for Rexel/Acco's customer service. I used it a couple of times and it was fine, before I started to shred some bank statements from an account I closed years ago. The shredder is rated at 7 sheets, so I put 7 statements in together and the machine died. To be clear, it failed on the first batch. The drive gear connected to the motor has one plastic cog, picture attached, and the teeth have been partly striped from it. This makes sense as a safety measure, but it makes the part a consumable as it is designed to fail in certain conditions. I called Rexel/Acco to get a new cog, expecting to pay a few quid so I could make a simple repair. Their answer was that no spares are available for these shredders, but I could send it in under warranty. Their warranty conditions however include "2. The product recommended sheet/film capacity having been exceeded" which is obviously aimed at this situation, as I can't prove that I only put 7 sheets through. If they don't accept the claim they charge £39.95 + the cost of the repair + VAT which is more than I paid for the device in the first place. So for the sake of one mostly plastic cog I will never buy a Rexel/Acco shredder again.

I would not recommend this product and will not buy again
Not overly impressed by this machine. Firstly we bought a lubricant with it as suggested only to find out it's not needed. Secondly, the machine constantly jams and overheats within a few minutes. Sadly we can't send it back as in the user guide it's clearly stated that it shouldn't be used for more then 3 minutes at a time and if overheated leave for 30 minutes. This isn't made clear anywhere before buying to beware. Really not convenient when trying to get through a lot of sheets especially as the 'it can cut 11 sheet at once' statement is also a bit of an exaggeration. I wouldn't even dare putting a credit card through it. I would not recommend this product and will not buy again. Waste of money.

Buy with care
I don't know if I was unlucky, but my shredder overheated in just a few minutes (and then stopped mid shred!! ) took then 10-15 minutes to cool down, couldn't cope with even 2 sheets of the sort of paper bills come on, and worst of all didn't make the 'shreddings' it did manage unreadable - they were far, far too large and then had to be ripped up. I've returned it to Amazon as 'not fit for purpose'.I've now gone back to the Rexel Prostyle+ Cross Cut Paper and Credit Card Shredder with 20 L Bin - 12 Sheet, Black - which costs a bit more but is way more robust.

Great little shredder - good value!
I've had this a few weeks, now, and during a period when I was clearing out my study so disposing of loads of old bills. I'd read that it said it would cut off with 2 minutes of solid use and that's not actually the case - as long as you're pausing somewhat in places I've found it lasts a lot longer. I also like the fact that if either it stops partway through a page (which it will!) or it's empty and you position another page ready to go, you'll soon know when it's cooled down again because it'll start working again of its own accord, so you can get on with other tasks in the meantime in the confidence you'll know when you can go back. Having had a strip shredder rather than a cross shredder before, I was worried/put off by the noise at first, which sounds a bit like it's struggling and I was worried it was going to die/break, in fact it's been very reliable and I think it's just the fact that the cross-shredding is more effort on the little engines these things have. You do need to keep an eye on the paper and empty regularly because if you let the box get too full it can become very solidly wrapped around and get in the way of the cutting edges - but if you clear it out really well and use the fast forward and reverse functions to go back and forth a bit, it will clear. I found the sound was off-putting enough to not really use it for more than about 3 pages at once but I think that's my own anxiety rather than the fact it won't cope, although I would try to be careful, if you do shred the maximum pages at once, that you position them very straight - because of the shape of the slot, which is wider than A4, I did find that where I added pages at a slight angle, they could end up getting folded over at the side, which of course means the number of sheets it's cutting increases, so best to be careful to avoid that danger when shredding 5 or 6 pages. I did use it to cut up a couple of expired bank cards and I can confirm this function also works very well without trouble. Overall, I'm very pleased indeed with it.
