Baroness - Purple
After two great sludgy and slightly proggy bruisers in the form of Red Album and Blue Record, Baroness pulled a dramatic change of direction with their third full-length record, the double album Yellow & Green. That album was pretty much a masterpiece which really expanded the band’s possibilities, even if it was in a way more commercial and less heavy. With their fourth album, Purple, the swampy southern band tries to bridge the two worlds, taking the more obvious singles from each of their eras, mixing them together, and using the mixture as the template for an album worth of banging, interesting, well-crafted rock music. It’s a bit less Radiohead than Green but its also a bit less Mastodon than Blue Record. The direction is one thing; the quality is what’s important. There’s no questions on the quality front whatsoever. You might not like the lack of heaviness or the lack of prog, but you cannot disagree that this is one well-made collection of tunes. The musicianship is great, the production is great, the vocals are getting better, and the songs are memorable. Month’s after my first listen I still find myself humming the likes of ‘Kerosene’ and ‘The Iron Bell,’ I still find my thumbs rushing to chose ‘Shock Me’ when I’m deciding what to listen to for my walk to work. There’s just a nice balance between variety and consistency, there are fast and slow moments, periods of quick fury and periods of slow somber reflection, but it all feels like one cohesive whole. An album where you could swap the track order around and still get the same journey. This has far more musical DNA in common with Once More Round The Sun than for example, Through Silver In Blood, so the heavy heavy sludge crowd may still find it off putting, but for the rest of us who just like a good time, this is one very enjoyable selection of gnarly Rock singles that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Red Fang fans will find a lot to enjoy here.Overall; great songs, get it if you aren’t a heaviness-snob.

Brilliant album from a talented group
I'm a massive fan of Baroness having discovered them some years ago via one of Metal Hammer's monthly CDs.Despite what some metal heads have stated, they are not a boring band with boring tunes. This album is full of power, heavy guitars, energy, a few delicate moments and some fantastic melodies. The album comes in at around 40 minutes, which is a good length but personally I wish they added a few more songs. In my opinion that's how good this album is. Loved the length of their previous Yellow & Green LP, although this was a double album.Highly recommend this album for lovers of hard rock and metal alike. All music is a personal preference and it's easy in the internet age to listen to music freely before purchasing. Skip over to the band's YouTube page and give them a damn good listen.

to make you feel like standing astride a field of your fallen enemies
Sublime, anthemic songs, to make you feel like standing astride a field of your fallen enemies, holding an imaginary orange aloft. Baroness have bullseyed what Mastodon have been aiming it in their last 2 albums. Baroness don't quite have the percussive arsenal that Mastodon have, but that's more than made up by the sonic breadth of this album, with plenty of little touches in the mix to make repeated listenings worthwhile. Which brings me to some of the sound issues metioned in other reviews. Being a very bassy album, with lots of elements at low frequencies, the sound can get a little towards the edge of clipping. Best listened to on equipment which handles bass well.

Big, heavy, and massively pleasing on the ears.
All I'm going to say is that I've dabbled in a bit of Baroness over the years and they've never quite grabbed me enough to rant and rave about them BUT, this album seems rather special. To the point in which I've gone to the effort of writing a small review. Apart from the songs on Purple, the production qualities are what makes this record stand out; huge, heavy and vast clarity. It's easy on the ears yet organic on delivery. I enjoy the artwork, which compliments the music massively. For a bands imagery to link so well with the audio is always impressive. From the Mastodon style beginning to the proggy end, I recommend this to anyone who enjoys their music heavy, solid, epic and progressive.

Stunning work of art
It's been a while since a record has made me feel such a gamet of emotions but this one is sublime. Beautiful lyrics, heavy guitars, dynamic soundscapes. How can you not, in the depths of despair sing along to Chlorine and Wine? Or give in to the defeatism of If I have to wake up (would you stop the rain?)? This is not just great rock music. It's a stunning work of art. I stumbled on to Baroness and like all serendipity I feel it has in some way enhanced my life through its existence.

Buy the vinyl.
I only discovered Baroness after a friend recommended the track Chlorine and wine to me. Wasn't to impressed with the sound quality on the digital stream from Spotify so I bought the vinyl. Boy was I impressed with the album. Awesome tracks and what a sound. Traces of Thin Lizzy, with the twin solos and even some Queen influence in there as well. Will definitely be buying the rest of the albums.....and now looking for a gig to see them live. Great band, great album.

Phenomenal, rousing & epic...
Phenomenal, rousing music. Epic in scope and feel. “Purple” is a joy to listen to and engaging from the very first note to the last.Perhaps less importantly, the sleeve art is wonderful, too.A fantastic addition to an impressive opus. In short, Baroness rules.

Super Pressung!
