The Very Best Money Can Buy
This is a very superior product. As a French chef, I have cooked escargots for over almost fourty years. I have eatened them around the world including many times in Burgundy. Many canned escargots are good but with issues. Some are the giant type that comes in a dozen to a small can. They are so large that they do not always fit into the set of shells that you may have. The other issue is teh digestive sack that many canned snails still contain and have not been removed. Many snails are fed an oatmeal diet before they are processed as a way to purge their digestive system. At one end of the snails are often a sack that contains still undigested oatmeal. Unless that part is removed, it is not pleasant to eat although harmless. These Consul Very Large snails do not have that issue. The size is not large but perfect. They are a little big bigger than a small shrimp, just perfect for use in a dish or put back into snail shells. The best way to prepare them before use is to drain and poach them for a few minutes in a white wine and broth combination with some parsley and shallots to rid them of a stale odor that canned snails will always have. Drain and they are perfectly good. Do not be concerned when the can is opened. The snails need to be prepared before being used in a recipe. Don't be concerned about not being from France. Deliciously edible snails come from many places. France is one of them but not exclusively so. It is the preparation that puts a signiture on them, not necessarily the country of origin. I absolutely think these snails are not only wonderful but a great bargain.

Consul Snails have rough ride or are seconds?
Im writing only to voice that, like another reviewer, oddly also in Colorado, mine arrived rather bashed up-enough so that I will discard the cans. Purhcased directly from Amazon-they were in a plastic bag in a larger box, along with another item-I cannot absolutley determine if they are sold dented or were damaged in transit-However, if i had to guess based on the packing and how they fit and the position of the dents versus other stuff in the box-which could only have touched the can tops-these are sent with dentsAmazon was great about a credit when i reported the damaged item. Was looking forward to trying these after the great reviews.I might add too, this is a product of Indonesia -so these are what i believe are aschatane-ie Asian snails-an equally nice snail -but not the same as French Helix snails most often found in restaurantsupdate: got some more of these, undented this time-excellent product and if you love snails, a great way to serve five friends a DOZEN at a time. Nice size, texture and flavor. A very good product and an excellent value.

once again cans were dented.
this is the second time i have ordered this brand of snails. last time it was the bigger cans, pack 2. they came in dented. so this time ithought to order the smaller cans. pack of 4. 3 of those cans came in dented. i will be leary about this manufacturer in the future. it is noteasy to get snails where i live at this good of a price. maybe i will need to try a different brand. the one can that was good was very good.one of the other 3 i did save because it was not that dented. but 2 of the cans i did throw out because they were really dented and i was afraid to open them. the snails are really big and very tasteful. i guess you need to like snails. my husband is from france and enjoys them often. but overall i have no problem with the snails. just the packing and shipping.

Escargot should be from France... these are not.
How disappointing to find that these Consul Escargots (in a somewhat European looking package) are actually a Product of Indonesia... I hadn't even questioned they'd be from anywhere other than France as I've never seen any escargots that weren't. Live and learn.Amazon really needs to disclose country of origin on their products, especially on food products.I've since reordered Roland Escargots which are French; I wish they'd been in stock when I placed my first order.*Amazon did make good on the situation.

Wife likes them
Wife has been craving for escargot. This was my surprise present to her. She loves them. I am neutral on them. They are not french. They come from indonesia. Seller bumped price by 50% soon after we received shipment.

Consul Escargots Extra Large Snails
Every can looked as if it were struck several times with a hammer before packaged for shipping. Probably seconds that were aquired under the cover of darkness.

Really good!
Just the right size, texture and flavor. Pre-heat the oven to 350f. A little butter, some lemon juice, a whole bunch of freshly squashed or chopped garlic sauteed gently until just a little less crisp. Add finely chopped shallots, let it simmer down for a little while. Open the can and wash those snails under cool, clean water. Take your time doing it. Use a collander. This is important.Towel them off. Retire your freshly bathed snails into a little casserole or some other oven safe thing that's not too big and not too shallow. Space them out evenly so everyone has a place on the bottom. Heave copious amount of butter on them along with a little more fresh garlic. Put some French bread or baguettes basted with butter and garlic on a roasting rack. Pop it right next to the snails. Hang out for ten minutes - just long enough for the smell of the garlic to get strong and you to get very, very hungry. You want to warm those little angels up, not cook them. Take them out, put them in a serving dish or just keep them where they are. Dump the contents of the saute pan over them. Cut or tear off just a little piece of bread, put two or three snails up on it along with the garlic, shallots and lots of butter.Make a video of yourself eating them because it's something you want to remember :)
