Much of the content appears in Perret's earlier book "New Comedy-Writing Step By Step". If you already have that book, don't bother buying this. If you haven't then I would recommend buying it rather than this volume. Perret is best known for being Bob Hope's head writer but it's a shame that his book makes little reference to contemporary comedians. The accompanying volume of comedy writing exercises is pretty good but nowhere near as comprehensive as Perret's "Comedy Writing Workbook". The strongest feature of Comedy Writing Self Taught is the practical advice on actually being a writer and how to build a career as a writer. As I mentioned earlier in this review, "New Comedy Writing......." is the book to get.

I have not finished reading it yet but the early pages sound good.
