Toothy stones, very little pressure required.
I wanted to start out with a cheap set so that I could get better at hand sharpening blades before moving on to more expensive stones. But these stones shocked me for the price. Every stone is toothy yet smooth and begins removing material with very little pressure which is great for minimal stone wear. Even all the way up to the 10,000 grit Stone material removal is smooth yet you can feel it with tactile feedback. Very minimal buildup requiring very little effort to clean. The only problem I noticed was a bit of quality control in the bonding of the dual-sided stones. I have two stones that show a teeny bit of separation between the two sides, but for the price I'm still amazed with these stones. Note, they are thirsty and seem to do better for polishing and refining when properly saturated with water but will cut dry, semi-dry, or wet. Very easy to flatten and rehone yet hard enough to sharpen a set of kitchen knives I have with a Rockwell of 67 which is about as hard as any kitchen knife will typically ever get. Most knives of this hardness are very hard to sharpen, not on these stones. Very pleased. I reached out to the seller about the defect in the stone lamination, and they immediately sent out a free replacement without questions. Would definitely buy again but honestly think it will be quite some time as I think these will last for quite a while.

I like it.
I bought this set as my first attempt to sharpen my own knives and I've been happy with it. I can't compare it to anything else because I've never owned anything else. I like that they gave me 4 different stones each with a different grit on each side (like 8 stones), a flattening stone, and a base, all in a nice neat case. I'm not crazy about the angle guide. It didn't feel comfortable to me. But it did give me some idea of what to do. It would be cool if it had a strop block or two, some stropping paste, and a place to store them, but overall I'm happy with it. It doesn't come with a lot of instruction but there are tons of videos on line. All of my knives were super dull and now I can shave and cut paper with all of them. I wonder why I used dull knives for so long. I think it is about learning the technique as much as it is about the equipment. Happy sharpening.

Great value
These stones will sharpen knives as sharp as you can sharpen them. The negative reviews I read appear to be people who just need more experience. Sharpening a knife is not hard, but it is definitely a skill. Getting the most expensive stone you can find will not help you sharpen a knife if you do not have much experience.I am also little irritated by the reviews that indicate these stones are not flat. All stones usually need to be flattened when they are purchased and all stones will eventually need to be flattened. All you need is a piece of sandpaper and a few minutes to flatten each stone. Some of the stones came remarkably flat and some needed a few minutes to fix up. Also, honestly, a stone that is not perfectly flat is usually fine anyway unless you are sharpening a tool like a chisel or a chisel-edge Japanese knife. In summary, nice stones, great price.

Very worth it, if you are wanting and willing to learn and spend the time!
I've never really used whetstones before, but DO cook a lot and have no patience for dull knives. I've kept my knives somewhat sharp with 'straighteners' and old oil stones, but is whole nother level once you figure it outYes, this method requires time dedication and much patience to learn, but sooo worth it in the end! I bought this set for the number of grits, but primarily the storage case for longevity.I recommend getting something ULTRA flat and some 220 wet/dry sandpaper to flatten each stone periodically throughout the sharpening process. I used a stone tile (beneath my 220 grit paper) and used it right in the bakers sheet i was using as my wet-tray to sharpen.I knew going in there would be a learning curve and started with my cheap knives and progressed to my better knives as i got the hang of it. Then i went back and did a really good job on the cheap ones i started with. They ALL slice paper now!!!...patience Grasshopper, patience...

Perfect
I hemmed and hawed about this due to the price, but decided to go for it, since I really needed different grades of stones for different knives. (Some are worse than others, some are excellent and just need a little fine work.)The stones, the silicone grips, and the bamboo base are all absolutely wonderful. The guide... meh. The flattening stone - double meh.I bought a set of plastic guide wedges, which I'm very happy with... and I bought a dedicated flattening stone (MUCH larger than the included one!), and I'm really happy I did that. The wedges are much easier to use and give you a choice on angles that the included angle guide doesn't do... regarding the included flattening stone, it's so small (smaller than a bar of soap) that I wouldn't want to even try to use it.Regarding flattening - I soaked the stones, and then decided to flatten each side of them, even though they looked really good. Good thing I did - they all needed it. :)Good product, would buy again.

Very satisfied.
They are great! Well packaged and organized. The grit increments threw me off at first. The first block was a 240 and 800 grit. The second was 600 and 1500. The third block was 1000 and 3000. I was figuring the first block would have been 240 and the other side would be 600. Then move on to the next block of 800 and 1000. And so on. Not a big deal just need to plan a head and get blocks soaking. The fourth block was chipping away a little bit the first time I used it. That's probably due to my lack of experience and not keeping the blade flat on the surface. Overall I am very satisfied with this product. I sharpened an old 10" kitchen knife that we have had for decades that I dont think has ever been sharpened other than the failed attempts of using a honing steel. I could run my finger down the whole blade and not break a layer of skin. Now it'll slice through a sheet of paper.
